Kilbowie May 2017 Day 1

We’ve had an amazing first day at Kilbowie – the sun is shinning and the children have been outdoors all afternoon.

We have a very smooth journey to Oban and not one person was unwell.  We stopped for a snack at the Green Welly near Crianlarich before making our way on to Kilbowie.

We arrived about 1pm and headed straight in for lunch.  After that, the children headed to their dorms to make their beds and unpack.  There was a fire drill practice and then the children got to meet their instructors.  The children in Group 1 have Dave as their instructor and Group 2’s is Chris.

Group 1 headed off for a nature walk and then had the opportunity to jump off the jetty into the sea.  Group 2 got to scale the climbing tree in the grounds using ropes and harnesses.  Most of the children reached the top to ring the bell and abseiled back down.

After a bit of free time in the games room, it was time for dinner.  Tonight’s menu was Sweet and Sour Chicken or Fish and Potato wedges all served with a pitta pocket and salad or veg.  For desert we had Lemon Drizzle cake which was delicious.

After we had tuck shop, we made the most of the glorious weather and headed outdoors to play two ‘scavenger hunt’ style games and then it was time for supper of sandwiches and juice.

The children have been an absolute credit to the school and their families – they have been exceptionally well behaved and supportive of each other.  They’re having fun and each and everyone of them has achieved something they hadn’t before today – wether it was climbing a tree, jumping in the water or making their own beds.

The forecast for tomorrow is hot and sunny again – we might take a wander down to Oban Town Centre for some Ice Cream and take in the scenery.

Transition Visit to Primary 1

We had lots of fun in the infant area this morning when our pre-school children visited Primary 1.   It was lovely to see all the boys and girls looking so happy and confident,  as they moved around some fun activity stations.

We began the session With Mr O’Donnell telling us the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Then we had lots of fun as we explored the story further through some activity stations.  We sorted some magic beans by matching the beans to the correct colour of cup.

We used our counting and  measuring skills to check how long the beanstalk was.  We used the giants footprints and Jack’s footprints to measure the beanstalk.  Some of the boys and girls noticed that the giant footprints were much bigger than Jack’s.

Then we tried to see who could make the biggest beanstalk using our fine motor skills.

We practised counting by counting the number of seeds we ‘planted’ in each pot.  Then we counted how many cubes long some of the leaves on the beanstalk were.

At the end of the session our buddies came along to meet us! They brought along some booklets for us with photographs of different places in the school.  It was lovely to see how mature and responsible the buddies were, and lots of them are already asking when they will get to meet up with their P1 buddy next!

Well done to all of our pre-school children on a very successful visit to Primary 1.  We look forward to welcoming you again very soon!

Summerlee Outing

Today the pupils from primary 5/6 and 6/7 went to Summerlee Heritage Centre in Coatbridge as part of their WW2 topic. Both classes had the opportunity to take part in a workshop – where the children became code breakers and had to solve the puzzle in order to find what they were looking for. They then had to search the museum and when they found their item got the opportunity to handle original Ww2 items related to a theme, then present to the rest of the class detailing the importance of their items during war time.

The pupils also had the opportunity to go on a trip down the mine and witness some of the conditions that miners used to work in – and got to travel on the tram! They also visited the row of cottages and saw different living conditions through the generations!

As it was such a nice day primary 5/6 had lunch outside and then got to play in the park! I think all the children would agree that it was a fantastic day!

Friday Health Week P5/6

To round off HEALTH WEEK, we had an active session this morning doing circuit training in the hall. We got into some situations with the group opening tasks but we got there in the end! The circuits included tricep dips,  squats, push ups and calf raises,

We have also been writing today. Our focus has been persuasive writing to promote the importance of health! This has included Exercise, What we Eat and Friendship.

Wednesday Health P5/6

Today has been another busy day.

This morning we had a visit from Fiona at Childsmile. This time she wasn’t telling us what we shouldn’t EAT.. She was showing us how acid can rot our teeth and what drinks we should avoid! If the paper stayed blue the drink was good – if the paper went pink – avoid!

Then after break we had a Heartstart session with Miss Tiffney – learning all about what do in an emergency and if someone stops breathing or is choking.

This afternoon we were outside for our walk a mile – even though it was freezing.
