Christmas at Nursery
The boys and girls have had a busy and fun filled week at nursery. They have been very busy looking through the catalogues, then using the scissors and glue to make wish lists to send off to Santa, we are now patiently waiting on our replies 🙂 They have been creative in the messy area, using scissors, glitter and glue to make snowflakes and Christmas baubles. All the boys and girls have been excited to come to nursery everyday to see what ‘Snowflake’ our Elf has been up to, she has been playing with our toys, wrapping our christmas tree in toilet roll and eating our sweeties for our party. The boys and girls have been very kind and brought cards into nursery for their friends, they got to post them in our postbox and sort them out into groups, putting the nursery stamp on them. On Friday morning the boys and girls were very lucky and got to visit Rosehall Care Home, they sang some lovely Scottish and Christmas songs to the residents, they then gave us a treat of chocolate and juice.
Roots of Empathy
Yesterday we had our fourth Roots of Empathy session with Miss Law. Roots of Empathy is a programme that teaches children how to recognise feelings and empathise with others. The programme is going to run in Primary 2 every Wednesday afternoon for 18 weeks. We will also welcome a real life baby into the class every three weeks and this will help us to learn in a real life way.
Over the last three sessions we were learning all about facial expressions. We learned that facial expressions can tell us how someone feels. During session one we thought about things that we think babies can do. Some of the suggestions were walking, sleeping, eating, dancing, talking and crying.
During our second session we got to meet baby Isaac. Isaac came into our class with his mum and dad. We sang the welcome song to welcome them to our class. Isaac lay on the big green blanket and we gave Isaac toys. We looked back at our list to see if Isaac was able to do the things we thought that he would have been able to. He could do some of the things and we think that the things he couldn’t do, he will be able to do in the future. We loved having baby Isaac in our class and we can’t wait until he comes back to visit us again.
Yesterday we started the new theme of Crying. We thought about what would make a baby cry and what we could do to stop a baby from crying. The children came up with lots of good ideas including changing a nappy, giving them a toy and feeding them. The children then also related this to what they would do if their friend was crying. Some of the suggestions were giving them a hug and trying to make them laugh. The children were also thinking about temperament and the way that different people react to different things. Lots of people in the class also got a chance to hold our pretend baby today; they were practising how to hold a baby safely.
Next week baby Isaac is coming again and we can’t wait. We can’t wait to see how much he has changed and what he will be able to do when he comes.
Christmas in the Nursery.
The boys and girls in the nursery have begun to learn all about Christmas. The children have been introduced to the story of Jesus through traditional stories and practising the nativity play (which all the children are fantastic at!). This week the children have decorated the Christmas tree, made lists for Santa, made their own wrapping paper and even decorated paper plates to make Christmas baubles. The boys and girls are beginning to get really excited for Santa coming and are enjoying coming in to find out what ‘Snowflake the Elf’ has been up to each day.
When Santa sent ‘Snowflake’ to Stane Nursery, ‘Snowflake’ had to travel from the North Pole. ‘Snowflake’ is a magical Elf, when we are in our houses, ‘Snowflake’ flies back to the North Pole each night to report back to Santa. Santa Claus even sent back our Golden Bears! Each day, Golden Bear will go home with a boy or girl who has been following the Golden Rules.

Heuristic Play and Physical Exercise in the nursery.
The children have been exploring Heuristic Play in the nursery. They have been building on their concentration skills, hand eye co-ordination and problem solving skills using every day materials. Heuristic play is set in a calm environment and the children helped set rules to keep themselves and others safe. There is no right or wrong way to use the materials the children just have fun finding out the different ways to use them.
We have also been learning about physical activity through ‘Moursercise’, where we are all keeping fit by doing exercises to music with some of their favourite Disney characters. The children and adults are having so much fun with this!

The Good Samaritans
The boys and girls have been learning the story of ‘The Good Samaritan’, they are showing their understanding of the story through various play and learning experiences. They have been learning about caring for others, sharing and being kind. The parents have been very kind in donating items for ‘The Shoe Box Appeal’ which the children helped pack into boxes and send to other children who weren’t as fortunate as the boys and girls at Stane Nursery Class.
Natural Disasters
The children in Primary 5/6 and Primary 6/7 have been extremely busy learning about natural disasters. They have investigated different natural disasters, studied tsunamis in more depth, build a model tsunami and tested it! Currently we are investigating volcanoes – imagine the fun with this! As part of this learning the children have investigated chemical reactions, looking at different solutions and how they clean a coin.
