Primary 3a join Cathedral GOMA

The latest artwork to appear in Cathedral GOMA (Gallery OMagnificent Art) online exhibition comes from Primary 3a.

Our Primary 3 learners have been studying different artists this term and the class’s eye-catching display features art inspired by four different artists. The work of Matisse was recreated using carefully cut out paper; watercolours were used to paint beautiful seascapes in the style of Hokusai; Munch’s ‘The Scream’ was recreated using oil pastels and paint; and our young artists used felt pen and watercolours to create striking abstract portraits in the style of Picasso. Impressive!

Keep watching this space for more masterpieces from Cathedral’s talented artists.

Cathedral’s attendance almost back to 94%

Good attendance makes a HUGE difference to your child’s progress and attainment. Every school day really does count!

At the beginning of March, Cathedral’s overall pupil attendance had dropped from 94% to 93.88%. However, by Wednesday 19th March, this had risen to:

93.97%

This increase sets Cathedral on track to get overall pupil attendance back up above 94% by the end of term. We can do it!

Many thanks to all parents and carers for your support in helping us maintain high pupil attendance across Cathedral school community. A helpful leaflet about attendance percentages can be accessed via the link below:

Cathedral and OLHS team-up for after school club

As part of Come Clubbing @ Cathedral, a group of dedicated Our Lady’s High School pupils are currently leading an after-school sports club for our Primary 5 learners. The activities, games and team-building exercises are helping Cathedral learners develop essential life skills such as teamwork, resilience and communication and, for our high school Sports Leaders, the opportunity to develop and strengthen their leadership, organisational and social skills. Most important of all, of course, is that EVERYONE involved is having great fun on a Tuesday afternoon!

Primary 3 learners embark on new science project

Two of the success criteria in the biodiversity section of Cathedral’s Primary 3 science programme are:

  • I can contribute to the design of an experiment to investigate what plants need to grow and develop healthily
  • I can discuss and evaluate my observations

These Primary 3 learners got going with this science work on Tuesday 18th March by planting sunflower seeds which they’ll care for and observe in the coming weeks. Given that sunflowers typically grow to around 6 feet (183 centimetres) tall, this could turn out to be a very impressive and colourful science project!

Smart School Council reaches out to local community

Smart School Council class meetings took place across Cathedral on Monday 17th March. The question learners discussed was linked to Theme 3 of ‘How good is OUR school?’, which focuses on our school and community:

How can we connect with our local community during Cathedral’s 150th anniversary year?

As always, Cathedral learners came up with lots of interesting and thoughtful ideas. These were collated by House Captains and our Smart School Council action board has now been updated (see above). We have four action points:

  • Local residents will be invited to an advance viewing of our 150th anniversary exhibition on Wednesday 14th May and the following letter will be hand delivered around the local community by House Captains in the coming days.

Exhibition invitation

  • Residents from the local care home and sheltered housing, as well as the Deaf Hub, will receive the same invitation and Cathedral Primary will organise transport for those residents who wish to attend.
  • House Captains will meet with William from Glenview Court sheltered housing to plan a series of events for residents and Cathedral learners to enjoy together.
  • Cathedral Easter bunnies will deliver an Easter treat to the homes of local residents before the end of term.

There were lots of other great ideas from Cathedral learners, too many to include this time round, which we will take forward further down the line.

Enterprising learners raise money for Missio

These enterprising Primary 7 learners recently teamed-up to form their own bracelet business to raise money for our Lenten charity, Missio. They set up an impressive production line to keep up with demand and, by Monday 17th March, had made an incredible £295.55. (which Mrs Duffy will round up to £300). This will be added to the money raised through our Friday Lenten almsgiving and the total donated to Missio Scotland, the Pope’s charity for world mission.

Well done, and thank you, to both of you!

Please join us for morning Mass

Fr Lamb celebrates Mass in the gym hall at 8.15am every Tuesday and Friday morning throughout Lent.

Lent isn’t just about giving things up but, more importantly, doing something extra to deepen our faith and grow closer to God. There’s no better way to start the day than by attending Mass and we look forward to seeing pupils, staff, parents, carers and parishioners tomorrow morning.

Primary 2 time travel through Cathedral’s 150 years

Primary 2 took to the stage on Friday 14th March for their Learning Showcase, linked to Cathedral’s 150th anniversary. Our young learners travelled through time in Dr Who’s tardis, from 1875 to the present day.

Their first stop was the Victorian era, where the audience learned about Victorian schools and the different Acts of Parliament which helped improve the lives of children.

The audience then headed to 1939 and the outbreak of World War II. Thankfully, there was a train waiting to take evacuees off to the safety of the countryside.

The next stop was the swinging sixties, where the audience met the Beatles and heard an enthusiastic performance of the Yellow Submarine. Of course, they also witnessed Neil Armstrong landing on the moon!

The time machine then whisked the audience off to the 1990s, where they came face to face with GIRL POWER in the form of the Spice Girls!

There was a brief stop in 2020, at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, before the tardis finally landed in 2025 with reflections from the children on how fun learning is in modern-day Cathedral Primary.

Primary 2’s showcase ended with a rousing performance of ‘The Year 3000’, as our young learners looked ahead to another 150 years of Cathedral Primary.

Well done to the boys and girls for showcasing their learning in such a creative and engaging way and to teachers and support staff for all their hard work preparing the children for their special performance.

Talk to your child about this week’s learning

We’ve all been there:

“What did you do in school today?”

to which your child replies “Nothing!”

Of course, as a Cathedral parent/carer, you already know there’s NEVER a wasted day in our vibrant school community and that EVERY morning and afternoon is filled with enjoyable and challenging learning experiences to engage your child and help them reach their full potential across the curriculum… and this week has been no exception!

As we arrive at the end of another exciting week of learning, Mr Young encourages parents and carers to dip into our ‘Talking to your child about their learning’ leaflet and select one or two prompts to have a short chat with their child about their recent learning. The leaflet can be accessed via the link below:

Spanish twist to Lenten almsgiving

Cathedral’s Lenten almsgiving took on a Spanish twist on Friday 14th March, with learners and staff being invited to wear the colours of the Spanish flag. There was also the opportunity to get some Spanish-themed face painting, which was very popular with learners across the school.

This year’s Lenten activities have already raised £668.53 for Missio. Next week, the children are invited to wear brightly-coloured or odd socks to mark Down’s Syndrome Awareness Day and donate an item for the local foodbank.

Many thanks to Cathedral families for your generosity during this season of Lent.
