Room 13 – January Blog

Well, it’s a new year and a new start in Room 13. We have set ourselves some challenging goals this term but with determination I know we can succeed! Let’s do this!!!

Social Studies

We have been learning about the Victorians and how they lived. It was sad to learn about what happened to children because only rich children went to school and poor children worked and got hit by a belt or cane to stay awake.

Numeracy

We were learning all about different types of triangles like isosceles, scalene, equilateral and right-angles triangles which have an angle of 90 degrees. We did a little bit of revision about 2D shapes and their properties like how many edges and vertices or vertex they have. We also did some revision on symmetry and how many lines of symmetry a shape has.

Technology

We are learning about how to make power point presentations. We are each making one about the Victorians and adding in text and information that we have found out from books and Wikipedia. We have been doing some numeracy threw sumdog.

Literacy

We have been completing our strategies through our non-fiction texts this term. We have used our topic Victorians to find out information and put them under sub headings then write the information in our own words and into sentences ready for writing our informational reports.

Expressive Arts

This term we have been doing Y Dance. In Y Dance we have been learning about aspects of our social studies topic the Victorians through dance. We are learning about the different classes that people lived in like upper class, middle class and working class. We’ve also been doing some art lessons with Mrs Cunningham using the Inside out characters Joy, Fear, Anger, Sadness and Disgust. We used lots of glitter, glue, paint and sharpies to make the characters which will be put on display in the hall as part of how we manage our emotions.

Modern Languages

For the past couple of weeks we have been learning Spanish with Mrs Stewart and the primary 7’s. We’ve learned how to have conversations in Spanish with each other and how to say hello to all the teachers.

Robert Burns

As January the 25th is Robert Burns birthday we have been enjoying learning about him in class. Who he was and why he was famous? He was a famous scot who wrote poems in scottish dialect. We finished our celebration with an amazing assembly where we read out his poems, had irn bru, tea cakes, shortbread, heard a piper pipe bagpipes and even got to see Mrs Stewart show us some scottish highland dancing moves. It was the best assembly ever.

Room 13 December Blog

Well it’s that time of year again, we have been very busy elves as you can see, here are just some of our fab December experiences…

Social Studies

In December we were writing about the Great Fire of London. We were talking about when is started and how it started and we found out that it started on the second of September nineteen ninety six and it started in a bakery.

Literacy

In December we do something called media, this is when we watch a film trailer and we complete our literacy strategies from it. At the start you watch the trailer. We are doing a new film called Ferdinand: it is about a bull that doesn’t want to fight and he gets taken away from his home, the setting is in Spain.

Expressive Arts

On the 12 of December 2017 we had a Christmas concert which every class participated in. Our class did two songs which were Slade – Merry Christmas Everyone and Wizzard – I wish it could be Christmas Everyday. We had a blast singing our songs. We also went to the pantomime to see Jack and the Bean Stalk in Motherwell Civic, the whole school went and enjoyed themselves.

Room 13 recently had their Christmas party on the 19th of December with room 12. We got to show off how good we were at Scottish country dances by doing the Canadian Barn Dance and The Dashing White Sargent. We got time to dance at the end to our favourite songs and we all dressed up very nicely.

Christmas Jumper Day

On Friday 15th of December we all got to wear our own Christmas jumpers to school. Throughout the day we did lots of fun activities related to Christmas. At assembly we got to work co-operatively and design our own Christmas jumpers. We all paid a £1 to help raise money for the Les Hoey Dreammaker charity. In class our teacher held a competition for the best design and the person got an art set as a prize.  Well done to our competition winner Zoe Rattray and our runner up winners Sophie Liddell and Lily Shaw. WOO HOO!!!

Food Hamper

At the start of December we were doing something called a charity hamper where we brought food, cosmetics or something else in from home every Friday until it was full. Every class did it then we took our hamper to the gym hall to give to a family in need.

Room 13 and Mrs Guinness would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Stay safe and we will see you all very soon. Bye!!!

Room 13 November Post

Hi All,

Have a look at what fun and interesting ways we have been learning this month! Enjoy!!!

Literacy

During November we did Grammar in a really fun way. We had to colour grammar words in to show what group they belonged to and each sheet was difficult in different ways. The sheets had different words on them which corresponded to a different grammar group like a Noun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb, Conjunction, Pronoun, Determiner and Preposition. We had to colour them in the colours and group together. There were some words that were really difficult, the strategy we did however was helpful because we would colour a few words in that we thought were the right answer and then look at the help sheet to see if we were correct.

We are going to focus on our grammar a lot more in the next few weeks and try to use some of the words we have learned in our taught writing pieces.

Numeracy

During our Number Talks lessons we have been focusing on Subtraction, our newest strategy is Place Value and Adjust. The Adjust strategy is a little harder than the rest because you have to remember to use your subtractions and addition carefully. The other strategies are Count On and Count Back which are a bit easier to work out. During our Sumdog time Mrs McGuinness puts up the leader board for us to see how many answers we have managed to get correct. The whole school enjoys Sumdog, we enjoy playing together and trying to improve our scores, skills and levels. We have even been going down to Primary 1 and 2 and helping them to get better at their Numeracy skills.

We are going to continue to work on the Adjust strategy in subtraction so we feel more confident using it.

Health & Wellbeing

During Health & Wellbeing we were completing activities on Talk Talk for the schools anti-bullying day.  We drew posters about how to keep ourselves and others safe and about how to cross the road in a sensible way. Some people drew people crossing roads with the Lollipop Lady or Man, people waiting for the red man to go green and even a lady waiting for a car to drive by before crossing.

We are going to focus on continuing to feel safe in school and helping our peers around us to do the same.

Social Studies

During the past couple of weeks we have been focusing on our Enterprise. We have decided to make Christmas pizza pan decorations. Our company name is “Pan It”.  Our slogan is “Get it you won’t regret it” and our logo is a Santa face. We all have our own jobs to do like managing director, production, finance, design, sales, personnel and buyer. We have two jobs that we are all going to do which is design and production. We all made badges so the customers know what jobs we are doing and what our company is selling.

Thanks for stopping by, see you all next month!

Room 13, Primary 6 October Blogging

Literacy

During October for one of our grammar lessons we did something called Blether Stations. Basically Blether Stations is a number of sentences that the teacher put around the classroom and in each sentence you had to find the verb in it which is an action word. We also identified the nouns and adjectives in the sentences as well. When we had found all the verbs we had to write them in the past, present and future tenses.

We are going to try and focus on completing our reading strategies more independently and in more detail next month.

                                          Numeracy and Technology

During our technologies time we went onto the laptops to play Sumdog and we did a time assessment. We had 50 questions to answer in 35 minutes. Our teacher put up the leader board so we could all see how many questions we had answered and who was in the lead.

We are going to focus on our addition and subtraction mental maths skills next month using our Number Talks strategies to help us.

Health and Wellbeing

On the 13th of October we went to BMX Biking on the tracks which was part of our school Health Week. It was very fun, we enjoyed going up and down the hills, around the tracks and jumping over small dips.

Seasonal

We have just had the best Halloween party in the school. We all got to dress up in our Halloween costumes and we got to go to different rooms to do dancing, gaming, watching a DVD and eating lots of Halloween treats. The teachers have all decorated their classrooms and the school with spooky decorations.

Thanks for catching up with us and we will see you again soon! Bye! X

Primary 6, Room 13

Literacy

This term we have been reading a novel called Tilly and the Badgers. We have been reviewing our comprehension strategies and mastering our skills. We have especially enjoyed learning all about what badger baiting is and that it is animal cruelty.

We have been writing instructions as our chosen genre. We have linked our social studies topic ‘American Civilisations’ to our writing and numeracy by writing instructions on how the Incas counted and recorded their numbers.

We will be moving onto completing the strategies more independently with our own reading books.

Numeracy

We have been enjoying learning Place Value up to millions. We have been extending our number knowledge and have completed an end of concept quiz on Sumdog which we all did very well in.

We really love completing our Number Talks in class. We are looking at our addition and subtraction strategies. We work with a partner so we can help each other think of different ways to answer the sum.

We are moving onto learning about time next week.

Health and Wellbeing

We have enjoyed fun start of year activities like Fun Fitness and Dodgeball games in P.E. and have moved onto athletics which help us improve our throwing and catching skills.

In class we have Respect Me display where we learn and understand our SHANARRI activities. We also have a friendship cloud where we write something nice about a person in our class to make them feel happy.

Football

Some people were given the opportunity to take part in our school football tournament. They followed all the class and school rules and completed all their work in time. They won 3 games, lost 1 and drew 1. Well Done Lucas and Graham!!!

ART

Our favourite activity in art has been creating a mirror image self portrait. We got to be creative with how we completed it but we had to pay attention to detail.

PJ/Movie Day

On Wednesday the 6th May the whole school will be taking part in Pyjama/Movie day to help raise school funds which will contribute to all classes end of year excursions. The children will be encouraged to wear their favourite PJ’s and will have the opportunity to watch the following movies “Frozen” and “Paddington Bear” with the option to buy refreshments such as popcorn, hotdogs and juice.
