Purple Friday FEBRUARY 22nd 2019

We are working towards our LGBT Charter status and our aim this year is to achieve our Bronze Award. Pupils and staff have all been involved in leading this important aspect of our inclusion work.

I am delighted with the hard work and commitment of all in the school and the way in which this has been embraced.

On Friday 22nd February we will have a dress down day with the option of wearing an item of purple clothing. All proceeds will be donated to LGBT Youth Scotland.

Developing the Young workforce

A range of business partners have kindly given of their time to visit the school yesterday and today and talk with pupils about their careers.

Pupils have been involved in a range of employer activities which will all help to aid their subject choices and career pathways.

Well Done to Mr Lawson and all of the staff involved in leading these two employer engagement days.

Author Visit

As part of NLC’s Read to Succeed initiative, Airdrie Academy had the pleasure of welcoming writer and illustrator Oisin McGann. S1 pupils were treated to Oisin’s humourous presentation which focused on the types of books he writes, the inspiration behind his writing and the creative writing process. The school was gifted with a fabulous illustration which Oisin drew as he answered the many questions asked by pupils inspired by his talk. Pupils also had the opportunity to purchase a book and have it signed.

All pupils are encouraged to read for pleasure and the school library has something to suit every reading age and ability. The school has recently received a large collection of new books so that all S1 pupils, recently welcomed into the school, can also gain the benefits of reading for pleasure.

Thanks for the visit Oisin!

S4 Prelim Exams

Well Done to all S4 pupils for their hard work and superb commitment throughout the prelim fortnight.

The invigilation team were very impressed with all of the pupils and really enjoyed working with them.

Fingers crossed for positive results! This is an important milestone for all S4 pupils. The hard work continues following the exams.

Keep working hard and take all of the advice and feedback from your teachers  that you are given and use this as a means of helping you to aim for success in the SQA examinations next year!

Good Luck!

Santa Jingle

This year, all S2 Music pupils were set the task of creating a short jingle to be played over the tannoy system before announcements, in the month of December. The brief was to create a short ‘festive’ piece of music using the Music Technology software. They also had to ensure part of the jingle featured original music. The pupils worked in pairs or groups of three over a three-week period. The Music staff selected the top 7 jingles, from which the winning jingle was selected by a judging panel made up of Mr Anderson, Mr Spencer and Mrs Jacobs. The sound file is embedded for you to enjoy!

The 7 finalists were;

1 Bailey Mair/Marc Blair

2 Leah Alexander/Robyn Ward

3 Emilia Tamburrini/Amy Levet

4 Daisy Atfield/Tyler Meechan

5 Lucy Haggerty/Declan Deighan

6 Ryan Reilly /Jamie Marshall

7 Adam Cochrane/Tommy Fagan

Winning jingle: 1st place Emilia Tamburrini/ Amy Levet

2nd Place: Daisy Atfield/Tyler Meechan

3rd: Place: Bailey Mair/Marc Blair

Well done to all of the pupils involved and to the Music Teachers for this innovative idea. Santa’s footsteps will be enjoyed throughout the school.

Dance Success

An update from the S1/2 Dance Show at Bellshill Academy yesterday.

We had 19 S1/2 Girls and 3 senior girls in attendance. The S1/2 pupils performed a combination of group and duo dances in various styles. All girls performed very well and their conduct yesterday was excellent. They will now be working towards the North Lanarkshire Competition in March. Senior pupils help to run the Dance Club and ensued that the girls were prepared prior to the show and on the day.

Congratulations to all of our performers (listed below)and thanks to our senior helpers and Mrs Robertson from the PE department.
