Drama is a pupil centred activity focusing on individual response and development. It uses language, movement and theatrical skills. Its claim for a place in education comes from a sufficient sensitivity towards both term development and the immediate needs of pupils.

The Drama department at Airdrie Academy is made up of two studios which are fully equipped with lighting and sound equipment. The studios are split by a sound proof partition which can be opened to create a larger space.

Drama in schools should be an enriching and satisfying experience encouraging communicative ability, self confidence, versatility and the ability to cope with unforeseen and difficult situations. All of these are recognised as essential to young people facing accelerated change in an increasingly complex world. Drama can provide a rewarding experience and an opportunity for personal and educational growth.

Group work is the core of any drama activity and allows the learner to take ownership of their own learning. Through taking a variety of roles of responsibility within the group this promotes effective contributions made by learners is valued equally both by the teacher and peers, this encourages a working environment built on equality, trust and mutual respect.
