🎒➡️🏫
Moving from primary school to secondary school is a significant step. We work closely with our associated secondary school to ensure this transition is carefully planned, supportive and responsive to the needs of all young people.
Our aim is for children to feel confident, prepared and ready for the next stage of their learning.
🤝 Our Transition Approach
Transition planning begins early and involves ongoing collaboration between primary and secondary staff.
Information is shared to ensure continuity in learning, wellbeing and support. This helps ensure that young people are known as individuals and that appropriate support is in place from the start.
We place a strong emphasis on relationships, ensuring children feel supported and reassured throughout the process.
🏫 Working with Our Associated Secondary
We work in close partnership with Cumbernauld Academy, our associated secondary school, to plan a range of transition activities and experiences.
This includes:
- regular communication between primary and secondary staff
- sharing information about learning, wellbeing and support needs
- opportunities for staff to meet and discuss individual children
- planning experiences that help children become familiar with the secondary environment
This partnership helps ensure continuity and a smooth transition from primary to secondary school.
For children who will be attending a different secondary school, we work with the receiving school to support a smooth and positive transition.
⭐ What Young People Experience
Children are supported to:
- visit the secondary school and experience learning in a new environment
- meet staff and other pupils
- develop confidence and independence
- understand expectations, routines and how the school day is structured
These experiences help reduce uncertainty and build confidence ahead of the move to secondary school.
🗓️ Transition Programme
Children take part in a structured transition programme which builds over time.
This typically includes:
- visits to the secondary school
- opportunities to experience lessons and the wider school environment
- activities to support confidence, independence and organisation
- information sessions to help children and families understand routines and expectations
Further information about specific dates and arrangements will be shared with families.
💬 Pupil Voice and Support
We encourage children to share their thoughts, questions and any concerns about moving to secondary school.
Opportunities for discussion and reflection are built into the transition process, allowing staff to respond to children’s needs and provide reassurance where needed.
🌈 Enhanced Transition
Some children may benefit from additional support to help them feel fully prepared for secondary school.
Where this is needed, enhanced transition arrangements are planned in partnership with families, the secondary school and relevant professionals.
This may include:
- additional visits
- smaller group or individual sessions
- more targeted support around routines, organisation and wellbeing
Our aim is to ensure every child feels supported, confident and ready for this next stage.
