We ASPIRE to be the best we can be

Nursery to Primary 1

🌼➡️🎒

Moving into Primary 1 is an important milestone for children and families. We aim to make this transition as smooth and positive as possible by building confidence, familiarity and strong relationships.

Our approach focuses on ensuring children feel ready, secure and excited about starting school.

🤝 Our transition approach

Transition begins early, with nursery and Primary 1 staff working closely together to share information and plan experiences. This supports continuity in learning, wellbeing and relationships.

We take time to ensure each child is known as an individual and that support is in place where needed.

What children experience

Children are supported to:

  • become familiar with the school environment
  • build relationships with Primary 1 staff and other children
  • experience play-based learning in a Primary 1 setting
  • develop independence and confidence

These experiences help children feel more secure and ready for the next stage.

🗓️ Transition visits

Our transition programme builds over time, helping children become familiar with the school environment, staff and routines well before they start Primary 1.

From early in the year, children begin to take part in regular visits and shared experiences. These opportunities allow them to explore the school, build relationships and develop confidence in a gradual and supportive way.

As part of this, children:

  • take part in regular monthly visits to the school from February onwards
  • engage in play-based activities supported by school and nursery staff
  • begin to build relationships with older pupils who will support them in Primary 1
  • strengthen connections with current Primary 1 children who will be their ‘Play Pals’ next year
  • become familiar with the environment, routines and expectations

These experiences are supported by a more structured transition programme in May, including visits with Primary 1 teachers and opportunities for families to be involved.

During one of the May transition sessions, parents will have the following opportunities:

  • an information session and refreshments
  • time to engage with their child in the primary 1 classroom
  • opportunity to have a school lunch in the dining hall with their child

🤝 Working in partnership

We work closely with families throughout the transition process, providing information, reassurance and opportunities to be involved.

We also support children to talk about and reflect on their transition through shared experiences and activities.

🌈 Enhanced transition

Some children may benefit from additional support to help them feel fully ready for Primary 1.

Where this is the case, we plan enhanced transition arrangements tailored to the individual child. This may include additional visits, smaller group or individual sessions and closer partnership working with families and other professionals.

Our aim is to ensure every child feels safe, confident and ready as they move into Primary 1.
