S4 Football Results – Report by Reece Palmer, 4A2

With Coltness looking to improve from the previous week’s poor performance, the game started evenly with both sides struggling to create chances in a tightly packed midfield. It had to take something special to break the dead lock but that was on the card as Euan Scott (Coltness & Airdrie United) played an exquisite back-heel through to Coltness new boy Jamie Staniard who rifled home for 1-0. The drastic momentum switch caught St Margaret’s off guard and they found themselves picking the ball out of the net after Euan beat the keeper himself. St Margaret’s then produced a great save from Robbie Gardner as some tidy play from their left winger saw him beat two and thunder a shot into the far corner only for Robbie to produce the goods. Euan and Jamie both added to the Coltness tally again before half-time. St Margaret’s showed their quality in the end as on the stoke of half-time Robbie was found in no-man’s land as the number nine’s delightful chip sailed over him: 4-1.

Coltness made changes at half-time as squad rotation will be key in the long season ahead. St Margaret’s struggled to complete anything as Euan completed his hat-trick with a simple finish to the keeper’s left. A late Matthew Craig double sealed a routine win for the fantastic fourth years. It was a good win overall but St Margaret’s missed their goal keeper and a few key players. The team took confidence from the game and, hopefully, into their next fixture.

Duke of Edinburgh Success

A group of S4 pupils from Coltness have successfully completed the final expedition for their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. They enjoyed fine weather as they navigated around the Campsie hills. The pupils had to cook for themselves and carry all their camping equipment.

The school is delighted with the number of pupils doing Duke of Edinburgh awards – 22 pupils were on the final expedition. The school runs the Bronze group in partnership with local group Made4UinML2 and the council’s department of Community Learning and Development. With the expedition successfully completed, the young people now have to finish off the other sections of the award before progressing to Silver.

S1 Cycling Success

Jon McGhie, a first year pupil at Coltness High School, has cycled from Fort William to Inverness – the Great Glen Way.  This is a total of approximately 74 miles and covers lovely scenery in and around the Loch Ness area with some strenuous hill climbs.  On the first day Jon, and his Dad, Jim, cycled from Fort William to Fort Augustus – the longest part of the journey.  The second day was from Fort Augustus to Drumnadrochit and on the third day they cycled from Drumnadrochit to Inverness.  What an achievement for a 12 year old who also wanted to raise money for charity – Macmillan Cancer Support now has more than £300 thanks to Jon, and his Dad!  Needless to say, all the family are very proud of them as is the school! Well done Jon!
