To commemorate IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia) the council is flying the rainbow flag today at the Civic Centre for the first time. IDAHO was created in 2004 to draw the attention of policymakers, opinion leaders, social movements, the public and the media to the violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and inter-sex (LGBT) people internationally. The council is committed to eliminating all forms of prejudice and discrimination. Flying the rainbow flag sends a strong message to our communities and employees that we value and stand with people who have experienced discrimination and violence. The council aims to raise awareness of the impact homophobia, biphobia and transphobia continues to have on LGBTI people and communities and recognise the positive contribution of LGBTI people locally.
