Last year by taking part in the Ice Bucket Challenge the school managed to raise over £800 for MNDS and this is a theme that the Head Teacher would like to continue annually to kick off the House competition.
This year in celebration of Ms McNicol receiving the all clear in her own personal battle against cancer Mr McGilp got his head shaved and raised £700. The money however will not go to MacMillan as part of the “Bravetheshave” campaign but will be split between ‘The Maggie Centre’, Airdrie and ‘My Hair and Me’, New College Lanarkshire Coatbridge Campus, two charities close to Mrs McNicol’s heart and ones that have helped supported her through the course of the last ten months.
Over the last week pupils and staff bought raffle tickets for the head shave from House Captains, with the winner of the raffle getting the opportunity of taking the first shave of hair from the Head Teacher, Mr McGilp. This honour went to Shay Johnston who was delighted with his opportunity! The head shave took place at 2pm on Monday 21st September at Neil McMullan from “My Hair and Me’ one of the two charities came along to do the businesses. Ross Caldwell, a 6th Year Pupil gave some moral support by also going under the razor!
Mr McGilp also dedicated the act to Kelly MacDonald, a former pupil of his from Lochaber High School, the partner of one of his former shinty team-mates and his one-time hairdresser. She passed away two Thursday’s ago after a 14 week battle with cancer aged 29 having originally been diagnosed with skin cancer about a year ago.
Arran House sold 145 tickets, Skye 212 and Lewis were the winner with 276…obviously raising their game given they are Mrs McNicol’s House!”
