S1 Indoor Rowing Club
Abby Lawson, Beth Lennon and Cara Lennon, all of 4L1, would like to invite S1 pupils to attend their indoor rowing club in the fitness suite on Mondays after school. The girls, all members of Strathclyde Rowing Club, are keen to encourage as many of our new pupils as possible to come along to this new club. Scottish and British rowing has enjoyed great success and we wish our three rowers equal success in their sport and commend them on their enthusiasm in encouraging other pupils to gain some experience, improve their strength and get a real taste of this excellent discipline. Good luck girls!
Sports Profile – Craig McRoberts – Swimming
Craig McRoberts, 4S1, is one of our talented pupils who has excelled in his sport and academically. Craig is an exemplary student who, despite training for 2hrs in the pool each day, meets all deadlines, is one of our Bee Keepers, plays in the S4 football team and takes part in many of our extra curricular activities with great enthusiasm. Craig has been swimming competitively for five years with Motherwell and Wishaw Swimming Club and not only trains everyday but swims in galas most weekends. One of his career highlights has been swimming in Germany as part of a special training camp in the twin town initiative. Craig will soon be welcoming a swimmer from Germany to his home and to his club to return the hospitality. As a result of his total dedication to his sport he has been chosen to swim in the Scottish Championship team for North Lanarkshire. This is undoubtedly an honour for Craig but also for Coltness High who are proud to have Craig as an ambassador for this sport. Craig will be swimming front crawl on Saturday 26th September at Tollcross, the fabulous Commonwealth Games venue, and we wish him all the very best.

How Science really works
Amanda Stewart came in to speak to Miss Feighan’s higher class about her experience with breast cancer. She explained to the class that specialists predicted that she had a 97% chance of suffering from this as it is extremely common in her family lineage. She has recently undergone a preventative double mastectomy reducing her rate to 5%. As she doesn’t have the BRCA1 or BRCA 2 gene (which researchers have found causes breast cancer) the tissue removed is being used for research purposes. This was a fascinating and very worthwhile talk for higher students who could see for themselves the application of science. Amanda renewed the students’ enthusiasm for Biology and we’d like to thank her sincerely for her time.
S3 Visit Glasgow Sheriff Court
S3 pupils from Mrs Mullen’s English class enjoyed a visit to Glasgow Sheriff Court last Thursday morning. Pupils have been studying a short story where a teenager is involved in knife crime. The visit to the busiest court in Europe allowed pupils to see just a little of the grim reality of being involved in crime. As well as this, it allowed them to see the workings of various types of courts.
The group witnessed a hearing in the same court as what the recently ‘Glasgow Bin Lorry’ case took place. One of our girls, Sophie Barratt, was thrilled to get a chance to be in the Witness stand, while the full group all enjoyed the chance of being in the dock – hopefully a position they will not experience for real at any point! James Finlay enjoyed taking on the role of criminal defence solicitor where he was allowed to wear a real solicitor’s robe. Perhaps this will be some inspiration for the future! Pupils finally were able to see some real cases in the Disposal court, where the Sheriff was sentencing individuals for various acts of criminal behaviour. A sincere thanks is due to Criminal Defence Solicitor, Michael Poggi, who took significant time out of his working day to help pupils enjoy their experience.
Reece Palmer Sports Reporter
We would like to introduce one of our new sports reporters, Reece Palmer of 4S1. Reece is an enthusiastic student, dedicated to his studies and a keen footballer with a great interest in journalism. Reece will be reporting on some of our sporting events this term and his first report is on the S4 v S3 friendly that took place on Wednesday of last week. Reece, a talented footballer himself, also plays in the team and is an avid football fan.
Report by Reece Palmer:
The match began with the S4 team dominating from the first kick. Ex-Clyde payers Euan Scott and Jamie Staniard exhibited some class in the opening exchanges, both scoring within the first ten minutes of the game. Despite the early goals the fourth years had yet to find their stride as most of their attacking players were over-playing the ball, frustrated by Adam Wright in a stern third year defence. The fourth years found a way somehow with Euan and Matthew Craig coming through for the team. After half-time the s3 posed a threat with two or three near misses and credit to them for their persistence throughout the match. A late double from Jamie Staniard completed his hat-trick reassuring everyone that his decision to swap Clyde Valley for Coltness is a great fit. Without doubt the third years showed glimpses of things to come in the season ahead, particularly their truly awesome defence. The fourth years also displayed great potential and if they work as a team they could be very successful. We wish both teams the very best of luck as they embark on the first matches of the new season.
