Our week in class – 7/09/20 to 11/09/20

Hello parents and carers,

Here is what we have been learning this week in class, we hope you enjoy seeing our learning journey!

Numeracy

We have continued to look at time with Mr M. We played around the world game with the clock, focusing a lot on o’clock, quarter past, half past and quarter to. We also began looking at 5 minute intervals and we are beginning to understand what each of the numbers on the clock mean:

This week we have been doing spelling, handwriting and phonics in class – Sophia. A lot of us in class have completed running records and are ready for a new challenge with our reading bands. We had lots of writing practice on Thursday, looking at capital letters, full stops and how to plan a piece of writing. This was to help prepare us for our baseline on Friday.

We completed our baseline on Friday, the title was “My Favourite Day.” The children had the chance to choose which day they wanted to write about.

“The baseline was absolutely great!” – Millie

“It was a magnificent task” – Daisy.

On Monday we also introduced our star writers wall. Each week a piece of writing the children completed will be put on the wall. Those chosen for the wall will recieve either 2, 3 or 4 punches on their punch cards. The children listen to and vote for their favourite piece of writing. This weeks star writers were Ethan, Karlie, Daisy and Adelyn! They were fantastic pieces of work!

HWB

We have had lots of fun during our outdoor time in the afternoons. Plenty of time for fun, relaxing and getting lots of fresh air. We also got an extra 15 minutes outdoors for our fantastic behaviour in the dinner hall at lunch time each day. We also completed fun exercises outdoors with Mrs Williams on Tuesday.

On Thursday afternoon we filled out our new Wellbeing books for term 1. It revolved around the SHANARRI (Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible, Included) indicators and scoring how we felt in each of those categories in terms of being back in school.

Our topic this term is Ancient Egyptians. A couple of weeks ago we discussed what we already know and what questions we would like to know the answers too. So far we have learnt that the tallest pyramid is approximately 20 times the size of our school, the Nile river is the longest river in the world and it would take 9 MONTHS to walk from one end to the other. We have also learned lots of interesting facts about pyramids inside and out.

This week we focussed on the timeline of Ancient Egypt, learnt it was the very first civilisation and how Alexander the Great was responsible for halting Egypts expansion. During the timeline lesson we heard about Cleopatra and have since listened to the following Horrible Histories song roughly a million times in class:

We also looked at Egyptian Heiroglyphics and how it was different from how we write today. First we created our own codes using pictures to write a message to a friend:

And then we practiced our hieroglyphics:

And finally we deciphered the names of Egyptian Gods and then wrote our own names in heiroglyphics:

Music

This week in music with Mrs McDougall we learned about and practiced body percussion and a new tapping technique using a pencil on the table. Mrs McDougall was extremely impressed with the class, so much so they got a special mention in our virtual assembly from Mrs Robertson.

With Mr M we looked at movie music and asked ourselves how does this piece of music make us feel and why is music in movies important? We listened to pieces from How to Train your Dragon, Man of Steel and Avengers Endgame:
