Primary 4

Literacy

In Term 3 we continued to develop our reading skills through a range of activities which helped us to become more confident in summarising the text, predicting what will happen next and                understanding the meaning of familiar and unfamiliar words by         using clues from the text. In Term 4 we will continue to further          develop our skills as well as focusing on poetry especially poems written by Scottish poets. In our Talk for Writing we worked hard to create a range of newspaper reports. We particularly enjoyed           creating a report based on a sighting of the Loch Ness Monster! In Term 4 we will be focusing on writing persuasive texts, thinking about how we can persuade the reader.

Numeracy

During Term 3, Primary Four learned about money. We learned how to work out the change we would receive in real life situations and all the different notes and coins we could use when purchasing a range of items. We also developed our knowledge of time, learning how to convert analogue to digital and work out time intervals. In addition, we used stopwatches to record how long it would take to complete a variety of tasks. We had lots of fun doing this. In Term 4 we will be focussing on measurement with links to real life contexts to help us gain a better understanding of how to measure and          convert between metres and centimetres. As well as this, we will be continuing with our number talks, learning new strategies to help us solve problems.

Topic

In Term 3 we have focused on different aspects of Scottish culture. We learned about the Ceilidh and compared the dancing and music with 21st century dancing and instruments that are often used. We have also looked at Scotland on the map and identified Scottish         cities. We worked in groups to create presentations based on           Scottish castles. We then gave each other feedback to help us          improve. We will continue to look at a range of famous Scots with a particular focus on famous Scottish artists and poets.

Health and Wellbeing

In Term 3, we enjoyed our gymnastics block in which the children learned a variety of skills such as rolls, balances and how to perform sequences on a mat and on equipment. Primary 4 have had a short block of hockey which they have been very successful in. We will soon be moving onto Striking and Fielding which will give us lots of opportunities to take our PE sessions outside. Within PATHS, we learned about different feelings and being able to talk about these effectively. In Term 4 we will focus on further developing our self-control during tricky situations to help us remain calm and make good choices. We will also learn how to identify problems and create solutions to solve them.

RE

On a weekly basis, we have been focusing on themes and events within the liturgical calendar to help us gain a deeper understanding of our faith. Term 3 was a very important time for Primary 4 as they prepared for and received the Sacrament of Reconciliation in March. Recently, we have been working very hard to prepare for First Holy Communion. Everyone should now have their tickets for the day and all the relevant information about albs, photographs and times. All P4’s have a booklet which was sent home which includes the prayers and responses. I would greatly appreciate if you could look over this with your child. This will help them feel more confident on the day. I look forward to seeing everyone on 11th May
