Welcome to our Literacy PT

Chiara Sportelli is seconded to RIC Literacy from her position as Principal Teacher at Bannockburn Primary School, Stirling. She has promoted Literacy in the primary school through creative practices such as video conferencing, green screen and digital technologies and has recently undertaken learning an additional language and critically analysing 1+2 pedagogy through the Open University TELT programme which aims to increase and improve language provision in primary schools.  In her role with the RIC she will initially be focussing on paired reading, developing Literacy through play and creating a primary practitioners Literacy network via the Facebook group ‘FVWL RIC Literacy Primary Practitioners.’

Welcome to our Curriculum and Virtual Learning Lead

I am absolutely thrilled to be taking up my role as Curriculum and Virtual Learning Lead and working as part of the Forth Valley and West Lothian Regional Improvement Collaborative team. I have been teaching in secondary schools for 22 years and enjoyed being a Depute Headteacher for the last 7 years at St Mungo’s High School. I have worked collaboratively with primary colleagues and fully appreciate the dedication and commitment from all staff to support our learners through their 3-18 journey and beyond, driven by the belief that our young people are at the heart of everything we do.
I hope to support staff and work collaboratively so that Forth Valley and West Lothian is where children, young people, staff and families thrive in an exciting, ever-changing digital world and that our innovative, flexible, personalised curricular experiences empower all to fulfil their potential.
We are keen to celebrate the excellent practice within our RIC so please tag us on Twitter @FVWLricDigiCurr to share your curricular or digital experiences.
I am excited about what we can achieve together.

Welcome to Iain McGhee, our new FV&WL RIC Development Officer

I am delighted to be taking up this post with the Forth Valley and West Lothian Regional Improvement Collaborative (RIC).  I’ve come from a secondary background, originally as a Modern Studies teacher in Kilmarnock and Glasgow before spending the last 15 years at Senior Management level in Alloa Academy.  Although my experience has been largely based in the secondary sector I’ve always been a strong believer in the importance of lifelong learning and fully appreciate the great work that early years and primary practitioners do on a daily basis in developing our children.

I hope that working together we can continue to create a genuinely collaborative organisation that is able to meaningfully support educators at all levels across the RIC in our drive to raise attainment, create equity and provide the best possible opportunities for our children and young people.

Nurture Principles Wee Blether – 6 August 2020

Due to the popularity of the national Nurture Wee Blether in June 2020, we will be hosting a Forth Valley and West Lothian Nurture Wee Blether on Thursday 6th August 2020, 3-4pm.

This will be an opportunity for colleagues across Forth Valley and West Lothian to get together and have a smaller, more in-depth conversation about Nurture Principles and how we can use them to support the return to school buildings for children and young people. The event will be hosted by Education Scotland and Ed Psychologists from across Forth Valley and West Lothian. We will be exploring the following questions in discussions:

  1. Environment offers a safe base:
    • How are we organising our learning environments to help support wellbeing in different areas of our school and classrooms?
    • What are we doing to promote psychological safety for our children, young people and school staff?

  2. Behaviour is a form of communication:
    • What behaviours do you think we will see that will show children are coping or not coping when they return to school buildings?
    • What can we do to support children who are showing their distress through their behaviour?

This event is about giving practitioners the opportunity to talk and explore their thoughts. It is informal and conversational in nature where participants share their knowledge and expertise around the themes being discussed. If you are interested in being involved, please follow this link to register:
