e-Sgoil – Higher Applications of Maths – Free National e-Learning offer

As part of a free national e-learning offer, e-Sgoil is pleased to be able to offer places on the new Higher Applications of Mathematics course.

e-Sgoil recognise that many schools who had perhaps planned to offer this new course next session may have deferred for another year due to the impact of COVID-19 on planning. e-Sgoil will deliver this course remotely via Microsoft Teams within Glow, providing learners with 250 minutes of real-time, interactive teaching per week, along with high quality, online resources to consolidate learning. It is intended to offer 2 class cohorts, each capped at 20, with learners aggregated from schools across Scotland.

Nutshell guides for schools, learners & parents are available here:

FVWL RIC Easter School

Live lessons:

We are delighted that e-Sgoil and our Forth Valley and West Lothian Regional improvement Collaborative are offering an Easter programme of real-time, interactive webinars covering Nat 4 to Advanced Higher, for Scottish Senior Phase learners. The programme is not designed to deliver whole course content but will focus on key aspects of the subject(s) and hints and tips on how to be successful in assessments.

The programme which covers over 60 courses runs from 6th – 16th April and there will be three Live Webinars per course. Webinars are run through Microsoft Teams, accessible through GLOW logins, and will use a ‘flipped learning’ approach. This means that young people will have had access to high quality, online resources prior to attending each webinar.

Week 1: 6 – 9 April 2021

·         Start times are from 1.00pm -5.00pm each day.

·         Subject Webinars will take place on Tuesday/Thursday or Wednesday/Friday e.g. English could be at 1.00pm on Tuesday and Thursday and Biology at 4.00pm on Wednesday and Friday.

Week 2: 12 – 15 April

·         e-Sgoil Easter study support webinars will be running as per the existing e-Sgoil evening webinar schedule. Additional webinars have been arranged to match week 1 provision.

Useful information

·         The focus for the webinars will be on helping pupils succeed in SQA assessments as part of the Alternative Certification Model.

·         Resources will be posted in the Webinar teams and they will either be SQA past papers or assessments as well as any relevant materials from West OS and the Supported Learning materials from the National e-Learning Offer.

·         To book a place, Senior Phase pupils should have their SCN number ready and visit http://www.e-sgoil.com/easterstudysupportsessions2021/

National Teaching Awards – closing date 22 March

Is there a headteacher, teacher, or digital innovator who has done a fantastic job in your school this year?  Or perhaps there’s a lockdown hero who’s gone above and beyond to support your school community?  Why not recognise their hard work by entering them for a National Teaching Award.  You’ll have to be quick though as the deadline for nominations is 9am on Monday 22 March.

Visit the awards website for full details on the wide variety of categories that recognise the dedication and commitment of establishments, practitioners and education supporters and information on how to enter.

Learning and teaching in 2021 and beyond

Following successful sessions for headteacher colleagues, school staff (teachers, deputes, PTs and support staff), early learning and childcare (ELC) and community learning and development (CLD) colleagues are being invited to a conversation with the Deputy First Minister, John Swinney, and Gayle Gorman, HM Chief Inspector of Education.

The event, from 16.30 to 17.45 on Monday 22 March, is an opportunity to engage in dialogue about learning and teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic and the future of Scottish Education.

During the sign-up process, participants will be asked to submit a question for consideration. These questions will then be collated, themed and presented for discussion by a representative at the live session. Throughout the session, there will be opportunities to ask supplementary questions using a chat function.

Outline programme:

  • Brief introductions from Deputy First Minister and Gayle Gorman
  • Conversation, using the themes from the questions and focused on learning and teaching
  • Final summary

You can register for the event now. Places are limited to 3,000 participants and registration will close at 17.00 on Thursday 18 March. Please note, the event is being hosted by an external partner, therefore Glow access is not required. This session will be recorded and shared afterwards.
