Well, we’ve had a very sporty week in P3/4 this week! We have had a mini football tournament, a Commonwealth Games taster, a staff vs house captains netball game, Target Zone, Football Drive, a Go Yoshi tournament and of course our races this morning! Wow! Everyone has done so well and it has been lots of fun! We have collecting so many house points for our house.

We have been learning about the Men’s Football World Cup and which teams are playing. We have done a sweep stake, with everyone having 2 countries including Miss Amy, Mrs Skilling and Miss Allan. We coloured the flag of our country and found out a few facts about it like the population, its capital and what continent it is in. We are excited to see how Scotland get on this week!

We have also written a letter to Fife Council to ask for the day off on Monday. We used lots of persuasive language when giving our arguments why we feel we should have the day off. We feel we have been very unfairly treated!!

In Health and Wellbeing, P3 learnt about disabilities that other children may have and how we can be supportive and kind. P4 learnt about what to do if someone is choking.

This week in P3/4 we have been learning about persuasive techniques and how adverts persuade us to buy their product. We designed a new product and made a poster to advertise it using persuasive techniques like asking questions, stating how it will improve our lives, using slogans and giving special offers. We worked in pairs to design our product and make our posters.

In Numeracy, we reviewed lots of our learning from this year and we are going to do some revision and new learning now before the summer holidays.

In Art, we finished our Save Our Seas collage for the World Ocean Day competition. We learnt about how oceans and seas are being affected by litter and global warming and added some writing to our poster.

In PE, we practised our throwing techniques and precision to compete some target zone activities. Today, we played Go Yoshi! Children worked really well together in their teams.

In Health and Wellbeing, the P3s learnt about gender stereotypes and how these are out-dated and our sex shouldn’t prevent us from doing the things we want to. We thought about what we wanted to do when we are older. The P4s looked at how to stay safe online.

As part of our Social Studies learning, we learnt to give directions using language like left, right and straight on. We gave directions on a maze to a partner with a blindfold on and then used a map of St. Andrews to direct someone from the bus station to somewhere else.

This week we have started our Under the Ocean collage for the school competition. We have been learning about how the oceans are filling with plastic litter and this is affecting the marine life. Our collage shows marine animals but they have been made using litter, rubbish and scraps from the classroom to show how much litter is in the oceans.

In Literacy, we wrote a story with a fun fair setting. We created our characters and story line. We had to try and use similes, alliteration and colour-matching to describe the setting and our characters.

In Numeracy, we have been learning about fractions of amounts and fractions on a number line.

In PE, we practised the sack race for Sports Day and had a go at hurdles.

In Health and Wellbeing, the P3s discussed each other’s uniqueness and looked for similarities and differences. We learnt that having similarities and differences is great and we must respect our differences. The P4s learnt about what’s involved in looking after a baby.

We also did 2 treasure hunts where we had a map of the school grounds and had to use the crosses to find the items that had been hidden somewhere.

Friday 22nd May 2026

This week we have been learning about fractions. We have identified halves, thirds, quarters and more. We have shown different fractions with Lego pieces and have found fractions of amounts.

In Literacy, we reviewed the verb ‘to be’ and how it changes. We learnt that we use ‘is’ for singular and ‘are’ for plural.

We have been practising our typing skills and typed up our descriptions on Word. We are able to change the font and size and underline. We can also copy and paste an image from the internet.

In PE, we played rounders, working as a team to try and win.

In Loose Parts, we created dens like in our class novel ‘The Wilderness War’.

In Art, we have designed a whole class collage for the Rights Respecting Committee’s World Ocean Day competition. We have chosen an under the sea theme and we are going to use litter and rubbish to create the collage. We want to show that litter and rubbish are destroying ocean wildlife and that we need to do something about it.

In Health and Wellbeing, P3 discussed different ways to stay safe and what we can do if we don’t feel safe. P4 learnt about how new life is made. P3/4 also looked at ‘cool’ responses to situations and how our feelings can affect the way we respond. A ‘cool’ response deals with a situation calmly and people will respect us more for responding this way rather than being avoidant or aggressive.

In Social Studies, we used Google maps to explore our local area and look at what the land is used for in our local area. We found schools, housing, shopping, roads, farm land, hospitals, recreation like golf, skateparks and football pitches. We discussed why a city might build up and what a city needs as oppose to a town like Newport. We found out that Dundee built up because it was on a river and businesses were able to trade in and out on boats. Factories were built to make jute that could be sold on. Houses were built in Newport for the factory owners who had lots of money and didn’t want to live near the factories! They used to travel over to Dundee on boats each day.

Friday 15th May 2026

On Tuesday, we read lots of mini texts about David Attenborough that were placed around the classroom. We took notes and then used our notes to write an information text about him. We wrote straight on to Word to use our Digital Technology skills. We were able to add a photo too.

We practised using similes to describe some pictures. We also used an image of Mr and Mrs Twit from the class novel we read to write a description using alliteration, similes and colour matching. We are very creative describers!

In Numeracy, we learnt about fractions, using Play-Doh to make halves, quarters, thirds and eighths! We are able to recognise and show simple fractions.

As part of our topic, we learnt about scale that is used on maps. We used a 1:10 scale to make models with the Play-Doh of David Attenborough and a labrador or an emperor penguin. Because David Attenborough is approximately 180cm tall the model had to be 18cm tall.

In PE, we did our running races for the Sports Day relay and we played rounders.

In French, we learnt more body part names.

At Loose Parts, we made animal enclosures to play in. We thought about shelter and food and water.

Friday 8th May 2026

This week we have been exploring different types of maps of places around Newport. We have found where we live or places we have been. In pairs, we used Microsoft Word to write a blurb about a place we have been and added a photograph from the internet. We have displayed them next to the map with string going to where they are.

In PE, we practised passing the baton over in relay races. We raced around a track in our houses and other mixed teams, passing the baton on to the next runner.

In Literacy, we learnt about similes and came up with some of our own.

In Numeracy, we finished off our multiplication and division assessments and revised our numeracy skills on Sumdog.

We completed bar charts about our top 3 favourite activities to do to keep active. Swimming was the most popular and netball, chanter practice and golf were the least commonly picked.

We have been practising our spelling words and handwriting.

Friday 1st May 2026

This week we have learnt about alliteration and completed some activities to help us think of alliterative sentences. We have created our own character and used alliteration, as well as other descriptive techniques like colour-matching and similes, to write a description about them. We had to think about their appearance and their personality.

In Health and Wellbeing, we carried out a survey of our Top 3 activities to keep us fit and healthy. We then made a bar chart to show our results. The most commonly chosen activity was swimming and the least common were netball, chanter and golf. We know that activities like these are good for our physical and mental health.

In Art, we drew still life tulips. We had to work hard to draw lightly with our pencils so we could make changes if we wanted to. We tried to draw what we could see in front of us rather that guessing. We used pastels to colour them and tried to show the different shades of colours.

For our topic, we had to map the Nursery Garden. We sketched it out as we walked around it and then took time to make sure everything was correct and made a key.

In PE, we started working on our throwing skills by practising throwing a javelin and a shot put as well as practising an under arm throw for bowling in rounders. We also had a station for doing some long distance running.

In French, we learnt the vocabulary for some sports in French. We practised saying ones we liked and which we didn’t.

In Numeracy, we have been practising dividing with remainders.

Friday 24th April 2026

Hello and welcome back! We have written a postcard about our holidays and drew a picture on the front. We came up with the Steps to Success, including openers, connectives, adjectives, adverbs and alliteration!

In Numeracy, we learnt about multiplication and division number families and started some learning on division with remainders.

In Art, we have started a piece of art by drawing and decorating a vase or jug for tulips to go in next week.

In PE, we played Scatter Rounders which was fun and everyone played really fairly.

Our new topic is Maps and Our Local Area. This week we learnt that maps need a key to show what the symbols are representing on the map. We created our own Treasure Islands with a key.

The RNLI came to talk to us about water safety. We learnt about the different flags and what they mean, how to get help and how to ‘float for life’.

In Literacy, we learnt about vowels and when to use a and an in a sentence.

Friday 2nd April 2026

This week we have been getting ready for the Spring Assembly. We have practised our lines and sung the songs. We hope you enjoyed it this morning.

In Literacy, we had groups discussions about whether children should get to go to the moon. We found out on Newsround that there is a shuttle heading there at the moment. Children came up with for and against arguments and then we also wrote a discussion to share our personal thoughts. The P3s also uplevelled some sentences using adjectives, adverbs, fancy verbs, openers and connectives! What a great job!

In Numeracy, we are continuing to practise our division facts and strategies.

In PE, we played Chicken or Hero and Jungle’s on Fire.

In Art, we made Easter Egg decorations by weaving with thread around the shape of an egg. Despite a few tangles initially they are finished and look great.

Happy Easter, everyone. Have a great holiday.

Friday 27th March 2026

This week we have been learning more about Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his life. We took notes during a presentation and then used these to complete a fact file. Did you know he had the same birthday as Hamish?! He also has his face on a £100 note!

In Art, we turned Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s ‘Glasgow roses’ into our own spring themed designs. We thought about spring colours and symbols of spring that we could use to fill the spaces.

We had group discussions about whether school should be 4 days a week instead of 5. Children shared their ideas in groups and then recorded them in a plan. Then they used their notes to write a balanced argument using openers, connectives and describing words. We worked hard this week on adding extra detail.

In Numeracy, we have been continuing our division work, this week thinking about division as counting up the equal groups. We have been practising using strategies that work best for us when dividing by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10.

In Health and Wellbeing, we designed a healthy, well-balanced meal making sure we had food from each of the food groups in the right amounts. Children got to write an invitation to someone that they wanted to come and eat their meal!

In PE, we practised our throwing and catching with a rugby ball. We also played a game where we had to try and catch a band from the back of children’s waist bands and take them to our team’s base. Children could them come and steal them back. We also loved playing with the P1/2s at Loose Parts and had time to create our own play.

This week, we have had committees every afternoon so children have been learning and completing tasks in their different committee groups.
