P5d become Engineers for the afternoon

What a treat P5 had today! Two very kind engineers came and helped us build a bridge.  We worked as a team to figure out the quickest and safest way to build the bridge, walk over it and then dismantle it again.

Thank you very much for an amazing, hands on experience.

P5d – Angles all around us!

We have been learning how to identify and classify angles using the terms: acute, right, obtuse, straight and reflex.

We have been investigating angles in the environment and classifying them using appropriate mathematical vocabulary.

Today, we took our learning outdoors and searched for angles in our school environment.  We recorded our findings on worksheets and discussed the properties of the objects.

“We were looking for angles in the outdoor classroom. We found right angles, acute and obtuse angles. We did find some reflex angles in the tyre.  We worked in pairs. We recorded what we had found on a worksheet on clipboards.  We also discovered that there are angles in between our arms and legs.”   Shay & Rocco

“We liked looking for angles outside because we didn’t know that there were so many angles all around us.  It was more fun than doing indoor work.  We found lots of right angles but not a lot of reflex angles.”  Lucy McG & Mirin

Excellent Effort today P5d! Well done 🙂

Internet Safety Day in P5d

P5d have been very busy this afternoon leading their own learning.  We spent some time working in pairs, in Google Classroom, thinking of some topics to learn about.  As today is internet safety, we thought about how we spent our time online.

This afternoon we:

  • discussed how we use the internet / technology in our everyday lives
  • demonstrated, using Chromebooks, how we are responsible internet users
  • showed how we can use search engines effectively
  • used a search engine to find facts on our chosen topics
  • used Google Classroom to work independently and collaboratively as a class
  • used Google Classroom to share ideas and opinions
  • discussed the dangers of the internet and came up with ideas of how we could stay safe!

Well done P5d! Keep up the good work online 🙂

P5d Outdoor Learning

Despite the bad weather, P5d persevered and went outdoors this week to do some Maths work.

Last week, we went to the Chesnut garden and collected sticks and other materials that were lying around the ground. Before we went out, we discussed what we might need to look out for.

This week, we went to the outdoor classroom and created symmetrical pictures and patterns using these shapes.

We also used our knowledge of 3D and 2D shapes to create models and pictures of shapes.

We worked in teams of 5 or 6 to read our brief and then collaborate to create our ideas.

Well done P5d. You worked very hard as a team and enjoyed your learning outdoors.  🙂

Angles

Primary 4c have been exploring angles in their local environment. We went on an angle hunt to find as many angles as we could in the playground. We learned that a right angle is 90 degrees, an acute angle is smaller than 90 degrees and an obtuse angle is bigger than 90 degrees. We even used sticks to create our own angles. Look what we found.
