P5a March Blog

STEM WEEK:

As part of STEM week we had a visit from BAM. We learned about the jobs of Civil Engineers and worked in two teams to build a bridge that we would be able to walk over.

Marcus said: “I liked screwing in the different parts of the bridge”.

Rachel said: “I loved walking across it. It was really strong”.

Louise said: “I liked connecting all of the cables together”.

Emma said: “I liked when Miss Convery had to test if it was strong enough and walk over it first”.

Thank you to everyone who came in to speak to us during STEM week – we loved hearing about the wide variety of jobs in engineering and the different workshops inspired many engineers of the future.

Numeracy:

This week we have been focusing on Area and Perimeter. We worked in teams to create robots with each part of the robot a different area and perimeter.

Special Achievements:

Well done to these talented girls who all did amazingly well in the Eco competition. Rachel came in 1st place with the winning poster! Alice, Dana, Poppy and Rebekah were Runners Up. Nice work 🙂

The House Certificate for March was awarded to Marcus for his excellent effort and attitude! Well Done Marcus.

P5d become Engineers for the afternoon

What a treat P5 had today! Two very kind engineers came and helped us build a bridge. We worked as a team to figure out the quickest and safest way to build the bridge, walk over it and then dismantle it again.

Thank you very much for an amazing, hands on experience.

What a busy week in P5d!

Primary 5d have been very busy this week. They were out to impress with lots of active learning. See what fun they got up to.

Maths & Problem Solving:

We had lots of fun using concrete materials to revisit our learning about equivalent fractions. We used pro bots to follow and create directions to enhance our learning about compass points and angles.

“I enjoyed using the pro bots because it was challenging to get the hang of them but that was fun. It helped us make shapes, straight lines and follow directions.” Lyle

We got very creative and came up with three different strategies to solve a problem. We chose to draw it out, use concrete materials and to use the interactive whiteboard. After we had tested these strategies out we reflected on which strategy we thought worked the best and why.

“I thought that drawing it out was the best strategy because you could rub it out and try again if you had done something wrong.” Lucy A

“I thought the concrete materials was the best way because you could stick them together and also I could see and touch them to know if I had the right combination or not.” Ethan

STEM:

We have been learning about types of forces. This week we explored and investigated what air resistance is. We did three different activities to help us investigate the factors that affect air resistance

Movie Makers:

We have been working in groups to write, plan and film a drama scenario. We chose a HWB topic that we have learned about and used that to help us create some super drama performances. Watch this space for the videos 🙂

P5d are going places!

P5 have been learning about angles and directions. Today we talked about directions and compass points.

We used beebots and probots, in groups, to come up with and follow directional instructions.

P5 interview a Civil Engineer

This afternoon P5 were very lucky to get the opportunity to interview a civil engineer.

We got to ask a lot of questions and found out some really interesting facts.

“I found out that Joe was inspired to be an engineer by his love for bridges”. Maya

“He studied very hard to become an engineer. Before this he was a joiner and liked fixing things”. Lewis H

”He works for Network Rail. Sometimes his shifts can be very long, up to 14 hours”. Brodie

“He works with a big group of people who all work together as a team”. Khayrah

P5 are looking forward to doing some more research about the roles and responsibilities of civil engineers and other types of engineers.

Numeracy: Kahoot

We love playing Kahoot in teams and have regularly being incorporating these into our Mental Maths!

STEM: Engineering

Today we took part in an Engineering workshop! We began by thinking about what we already knew about the job of an engineer before thinking about the skills that an engineer would need to have. We will be taking part in a competition to try and win an Engineering Award! In the coming weeks we will begin our entries for this exciting competition.

We then took part in this Diamond Nine activity in which we decided which skills we felt were the most important in being an engineer!

Christmas KNEX in P5d

P5d have had a very fun filled Christmas week.

They were given a design brief to create a stable structure capable of supporting 400g weight and also include a moving part.

P5d love a challenge and worked very hard, in groups, to design, plan and construct Santa’s sleigh.

The finished models were extremely impressive. Well done P5d.

P5d Get Creative!

Design Technologies:

This afternoon, we have been very busy constructing models using a variety of recyclable materials. Yesterday, we spent some time researching and planning out what we wanted to construct. We considered the materials we could use, their properties, the time it would take and how we wanted it to turn out.

Today, we brought cardboard, paper and some boxes to school from home. All of these materials are recyclable and we enjoyed putting them together.

We had great fun! We created shields, swords, daggers and more. Have a look at what we made!

Well done P5d, you worked really hard on these. Fantastic results 🙂

Breaking News!

We have been really enjoying getting our hands on newspapers and reading about current events. First News and Newsround have been keeping us up to date with local and national news.

Christmas prep:

We designed and painted small Christmas tree pots. These look really fantastic displayed in the corridor in school.

Role Play: Drama

We have been considering the importance of being kind and respectful towards others. We worked in groups and acted out different scenarios and chose the correct thing to do when someone is being treated badly. Have a look below:

Special Achievement:

Ruari won two medals for her Christmas Gymnastics competition! Well done Ruari!

STEM:

We have been learning to classify different animals into the five main vertebrate groups. We played games to help us learn about different animals before researching how to classify them!

Engineering Workshop:

We were lucky enough to have a special visitor who explained to us the job of a civil engineer. We then got to try different experiments involving flooding and measure how much water there was.

Spelling Stations:

We have been trying some different strategies to help us learn our spelling words. Have a look below. We enjoyed playing spelling games on Education City, multi-sensory spelling and word-search spelling! We loved it.
