5A Numeracy/ Outdoor Learning

Time/Angles/Fractions:

This morning 5A took their learning outdoors! Some of us were using our knowledge of time to complete a treasure hunt!

Ruari said: “We had to find the different questions around the playground and we had to answer the time question correctly and then crack the code!”

Alice said “I enjoyed trying to crack the code! There were some tricky questions but I still managed to find the correct code!”

Some of us were using what we have been learning about Angles and Direction and creating numbers and pictures with different materials and marking the angles with cubes!

Timothy said: “I liked the task to create a picture and mark the angles. We created a house and then a monster and used cubes to show acute, obtuse, right, straight and reflex angles.”

Some of us were using chalk and natural materials to show different fractions! Conor said: “I liked doing active fraction work. I drew shapes with chalk and then  put natural materials inside different parts to show the fraction.”

Well Done 5A! 👍

P5d Maths fun!

To consolidate our learning about fractions, we have been using active maths games and concrete materials.

This week, we used big materials to explore equivalent fractions.  We discovered which ones were the same and recorded that information in our jotter.

This was a great visual, fun way of exploring fractions.  Well done P5d, keep up the hard work 🙂

Learning Lots in P5d!

P5d have had a fun filled week  with lots of active learning.

STEM:

We have been learning about chemical changes. This week, we did a fantastic experiment to show how chemical reactions happen. We followed the scientific method to prove when one or more substance reacts together it makes a different substance.

Outdoor Learning Day:

Yesterday was Outdoor Learning day.  We planted lettuce and garlic chives. First, we put some compost into trays. Then, we sprinkled some of the seeds into the tray.  After that, we put some more compost on top and gave them a drink of water.

We have put them in our classroom windows and we are going to water them every day.  They need sunlight and water to grow. When they start growing we are going to each take a little bit home in our own pots. We are planning to recycle pots from home.

Good ideas for these pots include big yoghurt pots, butter cartons, ice cream cartons or bottles cut in half. We are also going to bring a bottle to school, so that we can water the lettuce in class.  When our seeds have grown, we are looking forward to eating them.

“I liked doing this because we are going to get to eat it when it grows. It was fun to measure how much compost we needed.” (Ethan)

“I liked it because we can make things out of what we grow.” (Laibah)

“I would love to grow tomatoes and basil so that we could make soup, pizza or pasta.” (Cara, Lewis & Lucas)

“I think potatoes would be great to grow because I like them and we could make chips, wedges or crisps.” (Lucy, Finn & Lewis)

“We could maybe grow strawberries.” (Joseph)

“We could make carrot soup if we grew carrots.” (Brodie)

Maths:

We have been working really hard this week at maths. We have been learning about fractions. We can recognise equivalent fractions, simplify and order fractions. We can also find quantities of a fraction. We have had lots of fun with big materials and games as well as recording our work in a jotter.

Well done P5d on another hectic week! 🙂
