P5d – Scottish Art Outdoors!

Last week, in the outdoor classroom, we were collecting natural materials to create pictures.

We worked in teams of four and we got to choose a picture to create.  We talked about what we had learned in our Scottish History topic and in our groups, we decided what picture to make.

“We decided to make a highland cow because it is one of Scotland’s most famous animals.” Daouia  “We used grass, stones and bark. We used grass for the inside because it looked a bit like hair.” Maya    “I liked doing this because it was fun and we got to pick our own group members.” Cloda

“We wanted to make Nessy the Lochness monster because it is one of Scotland’s most famous creatures. We thought it looked great at the end because we added in a tail and finns.  We also used stones and bark to put a Scottish flag in the middle.” Finn, Joseph, Daniel and Lyle

“We wanted to make a Scottish flag because it is quite important in history.” Matthew   “We collected bark, grass, stones and sticks and made our flags using these materials.” Brodie  “At the beginning we just used sticks and stones but it didn’t look that good so we decided to get bark to try and make it look better.” Ethan

Well done P5d.  You worked very hard, in your teams, to create Scottish images.

P5 interview a Civil Engineer

This afternoon P5 were very lucky to get the opportunity to interview a civil engineer.

We got to ask a lot of questions and found out some really interesting facts.

“I found out that Joe was inspired to be an engineer by his love for bridges”. Maya

“He studied very hard to become an engineer.  Before this he was a joiner and liked fixing things”. Lewis H

”He works for Network Rail. Sometimes his shifts can be very long, up to 14 hours”. Brodie

“He works with a big group of people who all work together as a team”. Khayrah

P5 are looking forward to doing some more research about the roles and responsibilities of civil engineers and other types of engineers.

Thank you very much for visiting us Joe.

P5d – Angles all around us!

We have been learning how to identify and classify angles using the terms: acute, right, obtuse, straight and reflex.

We have been investigating angles in the environment and classifying them using appropriate mathematical vocabulary.

Today, we took our learning outdoors and searched for angles in our school environment.  We recorded our findings on worksheets and discussed the properties of the objects.

“We were looking for angles in the outdoor classroom. We found right angles, acute and obtuse angles. We did find some reflex angles in the tyre.  We worked in pairs. We recorded what we had found on a worksheet on clipboards.  We also discovered that there are angles in between our arms and legs.”   Shay & Rocco

“We liked looking for angles outside because we didn’t know that there were so many angles all around us.  It was more fun than doing indoor work.  We found lots of right angles but not a lot of reflex angles.”  Lucy McG & Mirin

Excellent Effort today P5d! Well done 🙂

BBC 2 Live Writing Lesson!

This morning we took part in the BBC2 Live Lesson along with many pupils in schools around the UK! This was a 500 Word Story Writing Challenge to help inspire our Writing, giving us prompts and tips on how to write a fantastic story!

There was a surprise guest – David Walliams who read out a story to us based on children’s ideas!

Eilish said: “The story had everything that the children in the audience said and altogether made a masterpiece”.

Louise said: “I liked taking part in this because the author and illustrator gave us good ideas and then we got to write our own story”.

Gavin said: “They gave us some ideas and we made them even better”.

Dana said: “I like how even though it was only 500 words you can get so many ideas in”.

Internet Safety Day in P5d

P5d have been very busy this afternoon leading their own learning.  We spent some time working in pairs, in Google Classroom, thinking of some topics to learn about.  As today is internet safety, we thought about how we spent our time online.

This afternoon we:

  • discussed how we use the internet / technology in our everyday lives
  • demonstrated, using Chromebooks, how we are responsible internet users
  • showed how we can use search engines effectively
  • used a search engine to find facts on our chosen topics
  • used Google Classroom to work independently and collaboratively as a class
  • used Google Classroom to share ideas and opinions
  • discussed the dangers of the internet and came up with ideas of how we could stay safe!

Well done P5d! Keep up the good work online 🙂

Check out what Primary 5A have been doing!

PE- Tennis:

We have just started a block of tennis skills during our PE time! On Friday we began with practising our technique with partners and then individually. Have a look below:

Numeracy: Kahoot

We love playing Kahoot in teams and have regularly being incorporating these into our Mental Maths!

STEM: Engineering

Today we took part in an Engineering workshop! We began by thinking about what we already knew about the job of an engineer before thinking about the skills that an engineer would need to have. We will be taking part in a competition to try and win an Engineering Award! In the coming weeks we will begin our entries for this exciting competition.

We then took part in this Diamond Nine activity in which we decided which skills we felt were the most important in being an engineer!

Burns Day:

Have a look at the lovely tartan we wore for our Burns assembly and Ceilidh a few weeks ago!

St Ninians: P5A and B

We took part in a range of activities across different stations when we went to St Ninians! Have a look below.

Christmas KNEX in P5d

P5d have had a very fun filled Christmas week.

They were given a design brief to create a stable structure capable of supporting 400g weight and also include a moving part.

P5d love a challenge and worked very hard, in groups, to design, plan and construct Santa’s sleigh.

The finished models were extremely impressive. Well done P5d.

A very Merry Christmas to all of you and your families. Enjoy a well earned holiday break.  See you in the New Year, 2019!! 🙂

Emma and Cameron created a Christmas tree!

Well done Primary 5A!

Clay Ornaments

We created our own clay ornaments shaped into different Christmas shapes. We created Christmas trees, snowmen, stockings and candy canes. We then pained and decorated them.
