Fairtrade Fortnight

Dear Parent/Carer,

Our Fairtrade Pupil Group members have been working very hard to promote Fairtrade Fortnight which starts on Monday 24 February and finishes on Sunday 8 March 2020.

As preparation for Fairtrade Fortnight the Primary 4 pupil group members conducted a survey to find out which treats children would like to buy at the tuck shop we are planning to run. A subgroup of Primary 5s created posters to advertise the tuck shop around the school. The older members of the pupil group will be giving a speech and showing a PowerPoint to the rest of the school to raise awareness of Fairtrade. The Primary 7 members created a rota for the tuck shop (see below).

We would like to invite children to bring in cash to buy a Fairtrade treat from the tuck shop. We will be offering Geobake chocolate chip cookies, a variety of Divine chocolate bars and Fairtrade Jellybeans. The tuck shop will be running from Monday 2nd March until Friday 6th March. All items are £1.10 so please send your child with the correct amount if possible.

  • Monday 2nd March – Primary 1 and Primary 2
  • Tuesday 3rd March – Primary 3
  • Wednesday 4th March – Primary 4 and Primary 5
  • Thursday 5th March – Primary 6
  • Friday 6th March – Primary 7

Yours sincerely,

Homework Mon 23rd September – Friday 4th October

P5C – 2 week homework

This homework will run over two weeks because of the September weekend. It will be given out today (Monday 23rd September) and brought back on Friday 4th October.

The tasks are:

  1. Family Numeracy Homework

Being numerate helps us to function responsibly in everyday life and contribute effectively to society. It increases our opportunities within the world of work and establishes foundations which can be built upon through lifelong learning. Numeracy is not only a subset of mathematics; it is also a life skill which permeates and supports all areas of learning, allowing young people access to the wider curriculum.    (Education Scotland)

Families can choose one activity (or more if you wish) from the grid and work on this together over the next two weeks.  How you record and share your homework is up to you! There are some suggestions on the grid but please feel free to be as inventive as you wish.  This homework will last two weeks. On Friday 4th October, the eldest child in each family should bring in their family homework and the pupils will get a chance to share their activity with the school community.  The homework should be carried out as a family and each activity can be simplified or extended to allow everyone to take part.  There are lots of real life challenges to allow our pupils to see the benefit numeracy and maths has on our everyday life.  These activities are designed to be fun, active and engaging for all our learners.  It will not only promote their numeracy, but it will also develop their problem solving, creativity and collaboration skills.

Please share your learning activities with us on twitter! @kirkhillPS and use our #

Digestive System

This term in Science we are studying different body systems.

Last week we were looking at the digestive system in more detail and to demonstrate this we carried out an experiment using tights!

We mixed cornflakes, banana, cocoa powder and orange juice in a food bag (the stomach) and mushed it up before feeding it through tights as though it was the intestine. The less said about what came out the other end the better!

Here are some photos of what we got up to 🙂

First we put all our ingredients into the “stomach”.
Next we started to squeeze it out of the “stomach” into the “intestine”.
Some more squeezing.
Then we squeezed all the water out, showing that nutrients get removed in the intestine.
Squeezing!
