S5 Pupils interested in medicine as a career.

INFORMATION

Just to advise that Medic Insight have announced on their Facebook page that they will be opening up applications for their week long programmes (June dates) in the week commencing 19th February.

Closing date is 25th February and so there is a relatively short window to get applications in.

The Medic Insight programme (run by the University of Glasgow Medical Students) is for S5 pupils who are planning to apply for medicine (and who have not yet had a placement).

The Medic Insight programme offers an insight into the experience of a medical student, exposure to the NHS workplace environment (hospital and GP placement), presentations on core topics and simulated activities. The programmes have had very positive feedback over the last few years.

While we do not organise this event, NHS GGC supports the medical students to host this on our sites and our NHS clinicians host the placement activity.

NB – It is only open to S5 pupils who are on track to secure the grades required for medical school.

Interested in a career in journalism or the media?

We have a fantastic opportunity for a group of 15-20 senior pupils who are interested in a career in journalism or the media, or who are simply interested in developing their writing skills. Deborah McInnes from the ‘Student Rag’ magazine would like to work with a group of pupils to create a ‘Leavers’ magazine for East Renfrewshire.  Pupils will work together to produce and publish a magazine aimed at pupils leaving school.  There will be an opportunity to produce articles on a range of topics, be given feedback on your writing from a highly experienced editor and gain experience of working in this type of career.  This is an excellent opportunity to enhance your CV, widen the content of college and university applications and get your work published!

There is an initial meeting in the Conference Room at 12.20 on Friday 2nd September.  Please give your name to Miss McLachlan in Support for Learning if you are interested in being involved or would like to find out more.

Scottish Apprenticeship Week

Scottish Apprenticeship Week is from 29th February to 4th March.

Glasgow Economic Leadership (GEL) Finance and Business Services (FBS) are supporting Skills Development Scotland (SDS) with the annual Scottish Apprenticeship Week (SAW) campaign.

Activities include:

  • Tours to FBS companies from across the sector
  • Teacher/Career Guidance Workshop – NEW (Thursday 3rd March)
  • Teacher Apprentice Visits (throughout week)
  • Employer Modern Apprentice Event (employers only Wednesday 2nd March)
  • Parent Event – NEW (Tuesday 1st March)

The tours provide young people with opportunities to; learn more about the participating company, look round the office environment, learn how companies recruit, including internship, graduate, school leaver & apprenticeship programmes and meet members of the      organisation.  They would be particularly helpful for any pupil considering a career in Finance and Business Services.

If you are interested in attending any of these events, please speak to Mr Gooch or Miss McLachlan as soon as possible.
