Medic Insight Glasgow – S5 Week Programme

Medic Insight Glasgow is a student run society at the University of Glasgow that aims to support and guide aspiring doctors through both their decision to apply to medicine and the application process.

Medic Insight is a non-profit, voluntary organisation developed by current medical students with the generous help and support of both the University of Glasgow and NHS GGC.

The event will be a week long event and runs twice; 7-11th June and the 14-18th June.

Pupils are required to fill in a google form application and places are offered based on these applications therefore it is essential to take time when filling out these forms and please note the form does not autosave and so may be best to write answers in a word document first and then transfer.

The title for the National Essay Competition is ‘Do healthcare professionals have an obligation to improve the health of our planet?’

Deadline: 2nd February 2020

Students with an interest in becoming doctors, vets and dentists should consider applying because submissions can also be used to fulfill criteria for the Medical Awards Programme putting students one step closer to being awarded a scholarship of £12,000 to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine at university.

S5 MCHS Medics Society

If you are considering pursuing a career in Dentistry, Medicine or Vet Medicine there is a new S5 MCHS Microsoft Teams Platform for you to join. This will provide an opportunity for you to  communicate with other students in S5. You can also share useful information about upcoming events, discuss University Applications and listen to guest speakers.

If you are interested in joining then you should speak with Shraddha Meti or Lily Rae.

School Lectures in Medicine at Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh

For any pupils in S4, S5, S6 who are interested in pursuing a Medical career. These lectures are free.

This year, due to Government guidance on Covid-19 and for everyone’s health and safety, our lectures will be online.

There will be three lectures this year, two of which students will have an opportunity to ask questions beforehand. The most frequently asked questions will be allocated to one of our speakers to answer.

LECTURE 1 – BECOMING A DOCTOR
Available from 29 September 2020 from 7pm

This lecture features the key speakers and will focus on how to prepare best for application to medical school, including personal statements and work experience opportunities.

LECTURE 2 – IMPACT OF COVID-19
Available from 15 October 2020 from 7pm

Dr Adelina McLeod, Chair of the College’s Trainees and Members’ Committee will lead this lecture and there will be an opportunity to ask questions ahead of this lecture.

LECTURE 3 – ETHICAL DILEMMAS IN MEDICINE
Available from 3 November 2020 from 7pm

Professor Kenneth Boyd, Professor of Medical Ethics at the University of Edinburgh together with Consultants in Psychiatry, Acute Medicine & Obstetrics & Gynaecology will explore some of the challenging moral and ethical decisions taken by doctors today.

University applicants 2021

Aberdeen University Medicine Open Day will be a virtual event and will take place online on Saturday 13th June, 11:00am – 2:00pm. Registration is now open to all prospective students at this link. Further details about Open Days for all subjects will also be available in due course at abdn.ac.uk/openday.
 
The Medical Schools Council has also produced information for prospective Medicine applicants. For students who may be concerned about sourcing relevant experience or shadowing, they have produced this informative document. They are also hosting Medical Schools Admissions Webinars for teachers and careers advisers supporting widening participation applicants to Medicine. Full details are on the PDF attached; the first of these webinars will take place on Monday 8th June at 11am.
 
A series of informative videos about choosing a course and university, writing your personal statement, and funding information are available here. We hope these videos are helpful to your pupils as they research universities this summer and would appreciate if the link to these can be sent out to your networks. These videos can be viewed at any time and students can ask questions relating to any these talks at our June and July Unibuddy Live sessions, which are scheduled on our Virtual Events page here. Our Information for Teachers webpage is also available here, with guidance supporting informed subject choices for students of all ages.
 
We will also be attending the UK University Search Virtual Fair on Wednesday 17th June, and staff will be available throughout the day to answer questions from prospective students. Details about this event and how to register for students/teachers can be found here.

A team of aspiring doctors, dentists & vets are running a series of webinars throughout the month of June in partnership with Medic Mentor.

We have a range of webinars available, a full list of which can be found here:
– For candidates commencing, or continuing National 5 courses, these will cover specific subject areas
– For candidates commencing Higher where we will be ‘bridging the gap’ in order to allow them to best prepare.
– For pupils in S1-6 covering general revision advice such as time management, active vs passive learning.
