STEM in the Real World

As part of our STEM Fortnight, we were very lucky to have lots of visitors in our school. Our STEM family and friends came in to carry out experiments and hold presentations with the kids to give them a taste of how STEM works in the real world.

P3 Dean Park Visit

Take a look at some photos of our day out to Dean Park where we were Nature Detectives, looking for animal tracks and signs of spring as our trip out coincided with the first day of spring.

We also tried out the new park facilities at Dean Park and gave them a big thumbs up. Especially the slide which was really speedy.

NSPCC Visit

NSPCC visited Onthank and delivered assemblies to all pupils encouraging pupils to Stand Up and Speak Out.

Sport Relief

Primary 6 and 7 pupils were lucky enough to meet some Team GB Paralympic Boccia players! Jamie and Scott McCowan (brothers) came in to Onthank to show us how to play Boccia. Some pupils got the chance to have a go and even the teachers got the opportunity to play against each other.

P5 Maths

Mr McIlwraith’s maths group have been using concrete materials to show their understanding of a tenth also being represented as a decimal. We can now convert tenths into decimal fractions and understand that these are part of a whole number.

P7 and P1 STEM

Primary 7 pupils went a walk with P1 Buddies to help them collect sticks and leaves for their STEM Challenge. Primary ones have to build a dragon’s nest.

STEM continued

In our groups we added corners and wheels to our cars.

We met new Bloggers

P7 Gargieston pupils visited us today to share their Glow Blogs with us. We met new friends and worked with younger pupils to share information with them.

P5 STEM models

Our P5s have created a model to transport tomatoes from the mountain to the market. We used lots of resources including K’Nex, Lego, art straws, cups and much more. We think they look great.

STEM Car Building in P7

As an introduction to STEM Fortnight P7 pupils started on the road to car building.

STEM in P5

Primary 5 have been completing their first STEM challenge for STEM Fortnight. The children have to design a model to transport tomatoes from the mountains to the market. Our finished products will be uploaded soon.

More from World Book Day!

Here are some more photographs from some of our World Book Day activities. Primary 1 and 2 were lucky enough to have a visit from Mrs Claus and some classes also had Britain’s Got Talent Winner, Jai McDowall, visit and read a book. A huge thank you to all of our guests who came along on the day.

Heartstart training

As part of Health and Wellbeing, Mrs Williams and Miss Smith have been teaching all classes how to help in an emergency situation. The pupils already know how to make an ambulance call, put a casualty in the Recovery Position and they can help someone who has bad bleeding. By the end of the course pupils will be able to perform and recognise signs of a heart attack and perform CPR.

World Book Day in Onthank

Here are just a few of the pictures we took today. Well done to everyone who dressed up as their favourite character. Great fun was had by all and thank you to our special guests who read to children today.

Waste Week

We kicked off our week at Onthank with an assembly all about waste. Mrs Merrick and the Eco team will be leading this. Look out for more posts to see what we get up to.

Winter Olympics

STEM in the snow

P7 used their STEM skills to build sledges using materials they sourced from around the school. They planned how they were going to use the materials and then got to try the finished designs out for themselves.

P7 Burns Supper

P7 ran their own Burns Supper last Thursday 22nd February. Parents, carers, family and friends were invited along to join in our celebration of Robert Burns’ life. Children provided all of the entertainment on the day and great fun was had by all.

P6/7 Girls’ football team success

P6 and P7 girls took part in an East Ayrshire football festival yesterday. This was the girls first ever time playing as a team and they did not disappoint. They won all of their games- scoring 11 and conceding 0. Well done girls!

Heartstart Initiative

P7 performing life saving skills for choking, serious bleeding, suspected heart attack, CPR and the recovery position.

STEM Inventors

Primary 7 have been busy looking at famous inventors to help inspire our own inventions. We were lucky enough to have George Burns come in and help us design aeroplanes to kickstart our imaginations. We will now go and write up our inventions and enter into the Scottish Inventors Award 2018.
