Ayrshire Schools Burns Competition Success 2026

We couldn’t be more proud of Team New Cumnock today! ❀️

Each and every one of our pupils who represented the school at the Regional Ayrshire Burns Schools Competition is a superstar. The performances they gave in front of a large audience and the feedback from the judges on their adjudication sheets is testament to that.

We are delighted to be bringing home the following prizes:

1st place P1-3 Singing: Ruby Sh

3rd place P4/5 Singing: Megan M

1st place P4/5 Singing: Lexi B

2nd place P4/5 Verse Speaking: Stewart Y

1st place P4/5Β  Verse Speaking: Daisy M

3rd place P6/7Β  Singing: Arabella S

Isla M, Piper M and Chloe M were also in the top finalists of their Verse Speaking categories who had to compete again in a head to head and were awarded aΒ  golden certificate.

Alice M was asked to perform her poem in front of the whole audience during the results segment of the day, as she entered the competition reciting a poem which was written by her Great Papa, who sadly passed away last year.

What a truly wonderful legacy he has left behind in his talented Great Granddaughter.

Our Verse Speaking entries – Isla M, Ruby Sh, Piper M, Alice M, Daisy M, Stewart Y, Chloe M, Olivia M and Kal M

Our Singing entries – Ruby Sh, Lexi B, Megan M, Darcy B and Arabella S

Also a huge well done to our former pupils who are now at Robert Burns Academy and bringing home the following prizes to New Cumnock:

2nd place S5/6 Verse Speaking: Emma J

A huge thank you to our talented young people, brilliant local performers and all in our school community who joined us for our 4th annual Burns Family Night!

We love having the opportunity to welcome everyone in to showcase the work and talents of our young people, and with the title of β€˜Scots Schuil and Scots Teacher of the Year 2025’ to our name, we really do have a lot of talent to share!

The evening was a huge success, the profits of which will go towards our P7 Residential Trip. A huge thank you to our P7 pupils, Abbie, Arabella, Kal and Baylee who compared the night for us.

Tasty treats for our guests to enjoy. Thank you to P5 for helping to decorate the hall with our lovely Scots word placemats.

Former pupil, Ruaridh McMeekin joined us from EPIC bagpiping to play for our guests and young people as they entered.

Our wonderful school choir sang at the start and end of our evening, even giving the audience a sneaky peek of our Choral Festival entry for this year.

A jammed packed hall! We are extremely grateful to our friends, family, local community and invited guests for coming along to support us.

Local musician, Lewis Cedar entertained us with songs and had the children joining in. A huge thank you to Lewis who supported us with the PA system on the night.

Former pupils Emma Young, Amy Johnstone and Emma Johnstone, entertained us through verse speaking, instrumental and song.

Local musician, Joan McDade entertained us with some songs.

Tracey Harvey entertained us and had the kids in stitches with her poem, ‘Tattie’.

Our Strings Music Teacher Mrs Hill and her 2 children, Maeve and Adam, entertained us with their music and even had us up dancing along.

P6 Bikeability

Our Primary 6s have undergone their Bikeability Level 1 training.

We are extremely grateful to Courtney and Miss Nicholl for working with our young people to gain this award.

Bikeability Level 1 teaches us to:

  • Maintain our cycle: making sure our ride is in tip-top condition and make simple repairs
  • Glide: smooth, calm and collected
  • Control our bike: including setting off, cruising, slowing down, braking and stopping. (You’ll even learn to pedal one handed!)
  • Pedal: without feeling wobbly or out of control
  • Be aware of our surroundings: looking behind and turning around obstacles
