HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY!!

On Wednesday 20th of November, the UN convention on the Rights of the Child will be 30 years old!!

To celebrate, the whole school will dress down on Wednesday the 20th November & will try to wear blue. This is a free event to raise awareness. Pupils will also take part in activities in class during the day to celebrate the special occasion.

PATHS

This year at Mauchline Primary, we have joined many other schools across the UK, and beyond, who use the PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) Programme.  We will have PATHS lessons twice a week.

What is PATHS?

PATHS is a programme of lessons and strategies that helps children manage their emotions, communicate effectively and problem solve independently.

It takes a holistic approach to include all children, families and staff therefore we will be running information sessions soon!

PATHS is a research based programme grounded in the science of children’s brain development. It uses progressive schemes of work, engaging resources and diverse activities to establish a positive classroom.

PATHS helps children with…

  • Self-esteem, self-confidence and self-control
  • Frustration & anger management
  • Attention and concentration
  • Thinking before they act out in anger
  • Emotional understanding
  • Expressing their feelings in a positive way
  • Understanding that all feelings are okay, but some behaviours are not ok
  • Preparing for change (e.g. moving to high school)

For more information, feel free to get in touch with the school or have a look at the handout or website below. Also, keep an eye out for information sessions coming soon!

Dyslexia Awareness Week 2019

This week we are learning about Dyslexia.

The theme of the week is Building Independence for Life.  We want to raise awareness and show how, with the right support, children and adults with dyslexia can achieve their full potential – Dyslexia Scotland

For more information, please visit https://www.dyslexiascotland.org.uk/

The story behind Ellie’s Blue Dyslexia Ribbon

Ellie was Dyslexia Scotland’s first Young Ambassador. She came up with the idea of a blue ribbon for dyslexia to raise awareness. Here’s what she said when she launched the blue ribbon in 2012.

I want children to feel comfortable with their dyslexia and not to have to hide it away. Most children don’t want to tell their friends about it because they are ashamed or embarrassed.I want to educate people so that they understand that dyslexics are creative out of the box thinkers and that we are just as clever as everyone else. I want them to embrace their dyslexia and achieve their goals.”

This week all children will receive a blue ribbon to wear, to show their awareness of Dyslexia, if they would like to.

Homework Challenge

As part of Dyslexia Awareness Week I would like you to design a Dyslexia Awareness ribbon. Your design could include facts about dyslexia, images or information about famous people who have dyslexia. You can be as creative as you like.

Please make sure your name and class are on the front of the ribbon and it is cut out so the ribbons can be displayed around the school.

Please return your ribbon cut out to Miss Kirkcaldy by Friday 8th November. Everyone who brings in a designed ribbon will receive a small prize.

Best of all was the fantastic costumes and amazing dance moves! Thanks again to the members of staff that helped and Mrs Burt for running ‘corners’ and her help planning the parties. Also thanks to the members of the parent council for your help last week. All was greatly appreciated.   We raised a fantastic £514.72
