As the children have been exploring various animals, some children used the ipad to investigate the terms used for mother/their young. Some children created their own images of animals and began discussing the need/care and nurture of living things. They then began discussing where their foods come from at lunch time, this progressed into ‘Farm to Fork’ topic. All children demonstrated an awareness of healthy foods particularly fruit and vegetables and were challenged to identify other food groups. Some children were able to use construction materials effectively to construct their own habitats, using mathematical language throughout.

In the art area the children began drawing/creating their own pirate ships with various mark making resources. This led to the discussion of treasure maps where they then created their own treasure maps. From this they used google maps to find their own houses within the local community.

This week in the indoor environment, the children have been observed mark making with purpose, adding details to their designs and scribing meaning to their marks. The children have filtered their mark making experiences from the art area into the small world area.
Following from children’s interests of jungle animals, the children have been creating their own puppet masks using a variety of different collage materials. The children then further extended their learning by discussing some animal features with a particular focus on the patterns of the animals for example “leopards have spots”, “tigers have stripes on them”. They then used their puppets to role play in the small world area, creating their own stories and were able to recall the animal sound.
Some children helped create a farm yard sensory tray using pasta, rice and straw. The children were able to use their imaginative skills whilst role playing and were able to exploring using their senses to experience real life materials found on the farm. Some children were able to use descriptive language throughout. Next week the sensory experience will be extended to create a jungle and real resources will be used to enhance the children’s curiosity of sight, touch and smell.

This week outdoors, the children have shown a continued interest in looking after our plants. We continued to lookout for changes and made sure they were watered in the warm weather. Along with our peas and carrots, we added our pumpkins which we grew from seeds & raspberry plants to our space and finished with some beautiful flowers which were kindly donated. The children have watched the process from seed to plant and are continuously learning what it takes to look after our environment and the different names for parts of a plant.
The children began showing an interest in dinosaurs through role playing. Dinosaurs and factual books were added to our small world space to explore more.
The children have enjoyed a focus on significant numbers. Using the number line and blocks to count out the correct quantities and being able to recognise their own age and numbers of their house.

The children have been using the ipads and promethean board to fact find about safari animals and extend their knowledge on the animals habitats. The children then extended their learning into exploring animal sounds and an animal sound guessing game to test their knowledge. Some children also enjoyed reciting animal rhymes and songs.

The creative area has had a revamp this week to encourage independence and self-selection of resources. This has been a very popular area this week where the children have been observed mark making, creating collage images and also constructing their own designs.

This week outdoors we have been continuing to build our knowledge around plants through exploring the different parts of a plant by making our own flower gardens and ensuring we looked after our carrots and peas – looking out for changes in how they grow each day. Within the mud kitchen the children used our herb garden to incorporate into their recipes. We explored the smell, texture and look of the herbs. The mint was a favourite herb in our mud kitchen.
The children have also enjoyed exploring risk and physical play through building their own towers and building their own obstacle courses outdoors. The children worked together to create challenging and more easy parts of the course and used problem solving to fix unsafe parts of the course, sometimes this took some time and some suggestion from an adult but the children persevered throughout.

This week in zone one we continued to extend our knowledge of buildings by using the internet and visuals to explore famous buildings around the world, expanding on our vocabulary and understanding of the world around us. After discussion of what buildings looked like in the past, the children made a link with the houses from the 3 little pigs story book. The children were challenged to create their own houses from various materials and resources to see if they could withstand the big bad wolf. The children were able to recognise how strong each material was and enjoyed the process using electricity (hair dryer) to test if the wolf would blow the house down. This was a fun experience which presented the children with problem solving, resilience and team working skill development.
We also began planting this week. We started by planting some fruit and vegetables indoors as it’s still too cold for some plants and spoke about the components of a plant such as the seedling, the root, the stem and the leaves. We also planted carrots and peas in our outdoor space. The children will keep a close eye on these plants over the next few weeks and show their leadership with looking after living things. We spoke about what the plants need to survive and how long we think they would take to grow.

This week in the creative area the children have been continuing to explore the famous artist Vincent Van Goch. You can find some of the children’s work displayed in the hall on our artist board 🎨😊 As part of our outdoor learning, we are beginning to explore planting. In the creative area some children have recently discussed the different parts of a flower including the seeds, leaf, stem and roots. We will be exploring this further through our upcoming planting opportunities 😊 Children have enjoyed exploring a variety of materials to create their own flowers using various mark making resources expressing creativity and design.

This week in zone one we extended our road safety learning a little further by role playing different scenarios. We used small world objects to recreate a village scene and recognised when it was safe or unsafe for our characters to cross. We used red and green man signals to recognise this. Furthermore, this extended in a small group where we recreated the scene on a larger scale, using our handmade traffic lights and the red/green man. The children engaged in this well and were able to confidently express when it was safe/unsafe to cross. We revisited our Ziggy road safety during this. Within small world, the children continued to create their own little worlds, using the roads and signposts throughout.
Also, within zone one, the children began to explore the concept of different types of buildings, this extended from interest in building towers. The children were challenged to see how tall they could make their towers and were introduced to different types of buildings via the internet – such as a skyscraper. We researched different types, how they are built, what materials they use and some history. The children recreated their own houses, cities, stables and skyscrapers.
In the creative area this week we have been further exploring a famous artist, Vincent Van Gough, focusing on his most famous paintings ‘Starry Night’ and ‘Sun Flowers’ and the children were able to recreate their own. The children were also fact finding about Vincent Van Gough too.  At the playdough station the children were exploring their malleable skills whilst creating their own sunflowers.

The children were able to use their imaginative skills setting up the small world area outdoors which has recently been revamped. The children seemed to enjoy exploring in this area, interacting with their peers and descriptive language was used throughout.
Some children were using the outdoor risk assessment to risk assess the outdoor area and identify any risks or dangers that may need acted upon.
The challenge this week outdoors was to explore height, using mathematical language throughout and comparing height of our peers. We were able to do this using the building blocks to see how many blocks tall we are.
Many children enjoyed exploring in our new reading nook as a cosy shelter to read stories whilst outdoors.

We had a variety of mixtures from spicy peanut butter to watermelon with pineapple. Some of the children were able to copy and write the fruit names from visual aid provided. The children’s learning was further extended as they made their own smoothies as part of their snack time experience.
The construction area continues to be popular area that the children seem to enjoy exploring in, with some children beginning to use constructed pieces in imaginative role play e.g.  it’s a chair, you don’t drive it.
Almost all children know and understand the green cross code of road safety- you must wait at the red man and can cross when the man turns green. Most children known about using a zebra crossing to cross the road and finding a lollipop person on the way to nursery/school in order to help you cross the road. All children discussed and knew the importance of holding someone’s hand to keep safe when crossing the road.
Some children have been exploring an old iPhone, utilised for photographs only, to find out about taking their own pictures and some showing an interest in making their own videos.
In the creative area this week the children have continued to paint their own daffodil pictures from real life objects, in line with a famous artist Vincent Van Gogh. We will continue to extend children’s interests in relation to this next week, exploring other famous artist.
