TRIANGLES

FRACTIONS

I got some really great work from you all last week, working on your multiplication and division facts. Today we are going to look at multiplication and division fact family triangles before we head back to look at finding tenths of quantities tomorrow.

Multiplication and Division Fact Triangles are a good way of understanding Fact Familys. This helps you learn the relationship between multiplication and division of numbers.

Fact family shows sets of related numbers.

The largest number is always at the top of the triangle.

The multiplication sign is always at the bottom.

Two dividing signs are always at the side.

This fact family tells us

30 ÷ 10 = 3

30 ÷ 3 = 10

10 x 3 = 30

3 x 10 = 30

Each triangle gives us 4 facts. Each answer is the number that is not used out of the three in the calculation.

Parents

To practise multiplication, cover the largest number with your thumb and ask your child to say both multiplication facts.

To practice division, show the largest number and cover-up one of the others.

e.g. for the above triangle, cover the 30 and ask your child to tell you what 3 x 10 is and 10 x 3 is or cover the 10 or 3 and ask them what 30 ÷ 3 is and 30 ÷ 10 is.

Your task today is to make your own fact family triangles of the 10 times table. You can complete the following worksheet or you can give your self a challenge by creating these on your own using your answers from Fridays task, drawing triangles in your jotter. You should have 12 triangles in total when you are finished.

Today we are going to look at doubles. When you double a number you add the same quantity again.

If I say double 2, your calculation would be 2 + 2 =

Have a look through this power point. You can count the spots on the lady birds back to help you find the answer to each doubles question.

Doubles power point

Now complete the task below. Just draw the lady birds into your jotter, drawing the same amount of dots on the other side and write the calculation below.

Keep practising your doubles. It is really good to know them off by heart when it comes to doing calculations in your head.

Below is a fun game you can go on and play to help you learn your doubles.

FRACTIONS

Next week we are going to be looking at finding a tenth of a number by sharing into 10 equal groups. What we are doing today will help us with this.

Do you remember when we counted in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s then linked this with the times tables. Well lets look back at the 10 times table.

1×10=

2×10=

3×10=

4×10=

5×10=

6×10=

7×10=

8×10=

9×10=

10×10=

11×10=

12×10=

Can you solve these calculations?

Remember,

1 x 10 is the same as saying 1 lot of 10 or 1 group of 10.

2×10 is the same as saying 2 lots of 10 or 2 groups of 10.

10 times table

Knowing your 10 times table helps us when we divide by 10.

20 ÷ 10 = 2     we know that     2 x 10 = 20     can you see the link?

Lets try another.

30 ÷ 10 = 3     we know that     3 x 10 = 30    can you see the link?

Lets have a look at dividing by 10. This will help us next week when we look at finding a tenth of a number. Can you solve the following calculations. Use your knowledge of the 10 times table to help you.

10÷10=

20÷10=

30÷10=

40÷10=

50÷10=

60÷10=

70÷10=

80÷10=

90÷10=

CIRCLES

Did you manage to write down all the numbers that add together to make 10?

Here they are below

0 + 10 = 10       10 + 0 = 10

1 + 9 = 10          9 + 1 = 10

2 + 8 = 10          8 + 2 = 10

3 + 7 = 10          7 + 3 = 10

4 + 6 = 10         6 + 4 = 10

5 + 5 = 10

Try to learn these, they will be really helpful to know when doing mental maths calculations. Set a timer and write down as many as you can think of in that time.

I hope you managed to use the strategy of bridging yesterday and solve the calculations I set. Today we are going to look at the language we use when solving addition and subtraction calculations.

Click on the following task to see if you know which words mean to add and which mean to subtract. Write the words under the correct heading.

Addition and subtraction language activity

Addition subtraction language answers

Now read the following word problems and answer the questions using the bridging strategy or a strategy we have learnt already in class.

For example we have been using a hundred square to count on and back.

Creating our own number line, not starting at zero but starting at the number the calculation begins with.

9 + 6 =

We write 9 at the beginning.

Do 6 jumps.

Then we fill in the missing numbers to find our answer. 9 + 6 = 15

7 + 5 =

We write 7 at the beginning.

Do 6 jumps.

Then we fill in the missing numbers to find our answer. 7 + 5 = 12

This is a really fun game to play to help you practise your tenths.

CIRCLES

Your first task today is to write down all the numbers that add together to make 10. Remember your switcher calculations!

Here is one to start you off 1 + 9 = 10

Today we are going to be looking at the strategy BRIDGING.

Bridging is a mental Maths technique of adding two numbers whose total is greater than 10. You count through to 10 then add the remainder as well. Click the powerpoint below for an explanation and calculations to try yourself. You have two tens frames in your pack that you can use today. Use your white board pen to draw in counters inside the squares or you could use your play dough to create little balls and squash them down as you count them.

Bridging powerpoint

It is called bridging as when you move the counters over – it is like you are building a bridge. Here is a few examples below.

8+5 = ?    We fill up the tens frame on the left so the calculation becomes 10 + 3 =

It is easier to add on from 10 than it is 8.

So if  10 + 3 = 13                         then so does 8 + 5 = 13

9+3 = ?    We fill up the tens frame on the left so the calculation becomes 10 + 2 =

It is easier to add on from 10 than it is 9.

So if  10 + 2 = 12                        then so does 9 + 3 = 12

6+7 = ?    We fill up the tens frame on the left so the calculation becomes 10 + 3 =

It is easier to add on from 10 than it is 6.

So if  10 + 3 = 13                        then so does 6 + 7 = 13

Now its your turn. Use your tens frames to solve these calculations using bridging.

8 + 3 =

5 + 9 =

6 + 6 =

4 + 7 =

8 + 7 =

9 + 5 =

5 + 6 =

9 + 4 =

5 + 8 =

7 + 6 =

WRITING

Persuasive writing

Persuasive writing is used to convince or persuade a reader that the writer’s opinion of a topic is correct. They want you to agree with their key message or point of view.

Did you manage to find out about any castles in Scotland? I have made a sway with a few popular castles.  Have a little look.

I have added a few facts about them and talked about some of their features. Choose your favourite castle or one of your own that you know about.

https://sway.office.com/lFEuEYXzIjPf3yI8?ref=Link

Tomorrow we are going to create a poster persuading  people to visit your chosen castle – like you are advertising your chosen castle.

Todays Task

Today you are going to plan what will be in your poster by creating a mind map.

Why would people want to visit your castle? What are the main attractions? What makes it better than the rest? Does it have lots of lovely features from our powerpoint yesterday? What is there to do when you visit?

I have created an example for my choosen castle. Have a look then complete yours in your jotter.

Below I have created flash cards just using pens and paper. I’d like you to create your own. If you do not have any spare paper then take some out of the back of your jotter. Starting with 0, 1/10, 2/10, 3/10, 4/10, 5/10, 6/10, 7/10, 8/10, 9/10, 10/10 or 1.

I also made tens frames – you can do this with the squares in your jotter and cut them out. Here is a copy of my tens frames if you are able to print them – Tens frames

Can you show tenths from 1/10 (1 tenth) all the way to 10/10 ( 10 tenths or 1 whole) by colouring them in? Then order them correctly from smallest to largest and largest to smallest.

Can you match the shapes with their fraction and order them? You can also play pairs with someone in your house. Pair up the fraction with the shape.

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

This week week are going to be looking at adding and subtraction and looking at various strategies to help us solve calculations.

When we add we count on and the quantity gets higher. If we add on 1, it is one more than the number before.

When we subtract we count back and the quantity gets lower. If we take 1 away, it is one less than the number before.

Please complete these  calculations to show that you remember how to count on and count back, remembering to check the calculation for the + or – sign. You can use your 100 square to help you.

Yesterday we were looking at shapes that have two equal parts – we call these HALVES.  Today we are looking at shapes that can be split into 4 equal parts. We call each of these parts QUARTERS. When you think about halves and quarters think about a clock. When its half past – the hand is half way around the clock. When its quarter past the hand is a quarter way around the clock.

Click the link below for an introduction to quarters.

quarter powerpoint

Your task today is to take out this worksheet from your pack – its similar to the worksheet you used yesterday. It has a number 2 at the top.

With supervision – Carefully cut each shape out and experiment with it by folding each shape in half and then half again. When you unfold it you should have 4 equal parts. We call each of these parts a quarter, 2 parts would be 2 quarters, 3 parts would be 3 quarters and 4 parts would be 4 quarters which is the same as 1 whole!

Do you know how many quarters you need to make 1 half?

The answer is 2.

You can use the blue squared jotter for all your maths and numeracy work. You also have a button wallet inside your big pack. We will use items in these over the next week or so.

In your packs you will all find a white A4 piece of paper that has 100 squares on it and a packet with counters and a dice. This is so you can create your own game of snakes and ladders. Start at number one and  go all the way to 100. Draw your snakes and then draw your ladders. Make sure they start inside a square and finish inside a square. Remember you go up the ladders and down the snakes. I have made one as an  example – click the link below.

For this activity you will need to get your large pack of counters out and your white board and pen. If you have not collected your pack yet don’t worry, do you have anything other than counters you could use? Toys, lego, sweeties, pencils.

  1. Count out 12 counters and share/divide them into 2 equal groups. You can split your white board into the number of equal groups asked e.g. for two groups draw a big line down the middle or draw two big circles. Once you have shared them – make sure each group is equal.
  1. Count out 21 counters and share/divide them into 3 equal groups.

  1. Count out 24 counters and share/divide them into 4 equal groups.

  2. Count out 15 counters and share/divide them into 3 equal groups.

  3. Count out 30 counters and share/divide them into 2 equal groups.

  4. Count out 28 counters and share/divide them into 4 equal groups.

  5. Count out 18 counters and share/divide them into 2 equal groups.

  6. Count out 8 counters and share/divide them into 4 equal groups.

  7. Count out 27 counters and share/divide them into 3 equal groups.

  8. Count out 16 counters and share/divide them into 2 equal groups.

CIRCLES

In your pack you have a blank laminated 100 square. Fill this in with your whiteboard pen and use this to help you with this activity. If you do not have your pack yet just use a bit of paper.

Before the holidays we had started counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Today we are going to recap this. In your pack you also have a blank laminated number strip.

When we count in 2’s we start at zero and add on 2 each time. Circle every 2nd number on you 100 square to help you count in 2’s. I started this one below to show you. Canyou go all the way to 20?

Now do the same and count in 5’s  from 5 – 50. Adding on 5 each time then counting in 10’s from 10 – 100 – adding on 10 each time.

WRITING

You can use the large purple lined jotter for all your literacy and writing work. You also have a button wallet inside your big pack for literacy. We will let you know when you need to use something from this.

Over the next few days we will be creating a newspaper report on something exciting that has been spotted around Logan! If you have any newspapers around the house, have a little look at them and see if you can spot any of these features.
