Rights Respecting Schools

Laurieknowe was accredited as a Silver Rights Respecting School in February 2024. This ‘Rights Aware’ award acknowledges our commitment in putting children’s rights at the centre of what we do at Laurieknowe Primary and Nursery, including providing opportunities for children to learn about their rights.

During the evaluation our children were praised for their knowledge on a range of different rights and for their excellent contributions during discussions. We are now planning for our journey to Gold!

Pupil Voice- Article 12

Through our Wellbeing Assemblies at the start of this session, we have continued to learn about the importance of the pupil voice at Laurieknowe.

Safety- Focussing our own and each other’s safety- also learning about allergies and simple steps we can take to support those who may suffer from allergies.

Dinner Hall- We have a new layout in the Dinner Hall with opportunities to sit in bigger groups and with children from a wider range of classes. Our children were asked to share their views on this new set up.

Vision, Values and Aims- Following on from the work done in Term 3 & 4 of last session, our refreshed VVA have been launched. There were lots of opportunities to discuss our values and what these meant for us at Laurieknowe. We were particularly impressed with discussions about ‘Equity’ and how we worked together to ensure everybody has the opportunity to succeed.

Digital Technologies- Using a child-friendly self evaluation, we spoke together about the additional resources that we now have in Laurieknowe to support digital learning. Children shared how this has been used in their classes or after school clubs that they have attended and were keen to tells us how they feel this has impacted on their learning.

Skills for Learning- As we plan for the year ahead which includes further development of play based learning approaches in P1-4 and for a skills progression framework for P5-7, we wanted to find out what our learners already know. We asked them what they thought were important skills to be successful learners and they blew us away with their knowledge. The suggestions included; resilience, determination, independence, motivation, communication skills and a willingness to ‘give it a go’. We have created a display using all the brilliant suggestions and look forward to being able to talk about this more in the weeks ahead.
