Sustrans/iBike Survey

This year, your child(ren)’s school is participating in Sustrans’ I Bike project. The school might have also participated during the previous academic year.

I Bike delivers a variety of active travel activities and events. These include, class walks, scoots and bike rides, Dr Bike maintenance sessions, scooter skills and active travel breakfasts.

Active travel is when a journey is made by being physically active, such as walking, wheeling, cycling and scooting/skating.

Sustrans’ Research and Monitoring Unit would like to invite you to complete a short survey about the project. This survey is collecting data for the purposes of evaluating and monitoring the I Bike project. We are interested to see the impact it has had on you and your child(ren) and your thoughts on what could make active travel easier for your child(ren). The survey can be found here: https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/sustrans/i-bike-parent-and-carer-survey-2024-25-dumfries-and-galloway.

The results may be used to influence and support further local and national funding bids and help define the health value of physical activity and active travel. It will help Sustrans to understand and continue to improve the project. Specific comments on local infrastructure will be noted but are beyond the scope of I Bike.

The survey closes on Friday 31st January 2025 and should take around 10 minutes to complete.

If you want to find out more, or if you have any questions, please contact IBikeMonitoring@sustrans.org.uk.

Thank you for your support in helping us improve the I Bike Programme!

Welcome back! The children have settled into the routines of school very well. It is a big couple of weeks for us whilst we move back into the school. We are all very excited! The children have been to visit their classroom today, looking at the cloakroom area, toilets and where they will line up.

We have also been busy in class going over our sounds and working on our number skills. We have been learning our small doubles (1+1, 2+2, 3+3 etc) and are now looking at subtraction using this skill.

It has also been an exciting week as our Homework bags have gone home with the first set of words. Please go over these as much as possible at home, along with the sounds we are continuing to learn. Reading books will start to come home over the next few weeks.

P4 & P5/4 Competition

‘Guess the Square’ Competition

We are running a competition to raise funds for the school.

If your child would like to take part in this competition, squares are £1 each and they will be on sale during the school day from Monday 2nd December until Friday 13th December (or until all squares are sold!)

The winning square will receive a Children’s Christmas stocking.

Pupils from P4M and P5/4M will come round each class every day to sell squares.

Many thanks for your continued support

Well done everyone! On Friday, for the first time this year, we won the Healthy Cup. Remember, healthy snack days are on a Monday and Tuesday.

A big well done also goes to Ariah, who was Star Pupil on Friday. She drew a super picture as part of Monday’s Foundation of Writing lesson.

On Friday, all children were given their slips for this week’s Learning Conversation and Set 2 sounds. Our phonics page has been updated to reflect this. Please work on the sounds and letter formation as much as you can at home.

What a busy couple of days. Well done to Zam Zam who was our Star Pupil this week.

The children looked super dressed up for Hallowe’en. In the morning we had various activities and as part of our symmetry maths lesson, we painted symmetrical pumpkins.

We have been learning our new sounds of m and d this week along with the number 9.

Today, we all had a go of the scooters. It was great fun!

Welcome back! Term 2 is a busy term with a lot coming up for the children. Starting with Hallowe’en this week, the children can dress up on Thursday if they wish to do so. This is entirely optional.

I have included a copy of our termly newsletter which covers everything we will be learning about this term.

The children have had a super first day back. Monday’s are always a quick day as we are so busy. The children enjoyed our Foundations of Writing lesson this afternoon where they had to draw a witch stirring a cauldron.

We were also learning about the number 9 today. The children created number 9 squares, like the Numberblocks programme. We had to think about this carefully to get the 9 multilink cubes into a square shape.

Throughout the day we have had the opportunity to Play. During Free Play this afternoon children enjoyed the Hallowe’en colouring in sheets but they also chose to play with other things/items throughout the classroom.

Happy Holidays!

It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of our first term of Primary 1. The children have settled in brilliantly. It is a big change to Nursery and it is a learning curve for all of us, but I am so proud of how far they have came in such a short space of time.

End of Day

Please bear with me at the end of the day! There are a lot of parents waiting and it can take me a while to spot you. I need to ensure that I safely hand over all the children so even if you can see your child, I will get them sent out as soon as I can. The children have all been told, not to leave the gate unless one of the teachers has told them to do so.

Play

We have had so much fun during play today. The school have been lucky enough to get a fleet of scooters from Sustrans. This is a super opportunity and the children had so much fun playing with them. Not everyone got a go but there will be plenty of opportunities after the holidays. Not only did we have fun, we were also working on our listening skills and balance. Miss McTurk and Mr Laidlaw had fun on them too!

**** Jackets/coats****

Please ensure your child is coming to school with a jacket/coat each day. The Scottish weather is very temperamental and it is now turning colder, so it is really important that the children have a jacket for our 4 seasons in one day type of weather!

******

Today we visited the Church for our Harvest service. The class were a credit to the school, they sat beautifully, sung-a-long to the songs and listened carefully – even answering questions in front of the whole school. Well done P1!

After break today, we continued to learn a little more about data handling. This time, the children made up their own questions to ask the other children. We had a lot of favourite foods, shapes, biscuits, footballers and much more!

Play continues to be a big part of our day to day learning….

We have had a busy few weeks in class.

Literacy

We are continuing to learn our sounds – the first set were sent home last week. Please work on these as much as possible at home. Today we were learning the sound for ‘r’. We painted rainbows! Please look at our phonics page to see all of Set 1 sounds. Set 2 sounds will be loaded when we have finished the last couple of sounds.

Numeracy

In numeracy we have been working our way through our numbers and making sure we are confident with them before we move on to adding within 5.

Maths

Over the past 4 weeks we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. The children have looked for them in our environment and used 3D shapes to make some amazing structures.

Today we have moved on to data handling. We were finding out what was the most popular eye colour and favourite fruit. We had a great time doing this!

Health and Wellbeing

PE is on a Wednesday and Friday. During these sessions we have been working on our listening skills along with ball skills. When the weather has been nice we have had our PE sessions with P2/1 and used various PE equipment e.g. hula hoops, bean bags, hurdles, balls etc. The children have really enjoyed these sessions.

Also in Health and Wellbeing in class, we have looked at who helps us at school, friendships and personal space.
