The value of Art and Design at secondary school.

Art & Design helps learners become more aware of and be responsive to the world around them.

The learning experiences in art & design present challenges to use imagination and develop specific knowledge and skills within a climate of creativity and innovation.

To achieve success learners must demonstrate commitment and perseverance in developing and presenting their ideas and expression. They will make their own art and design work using lots of different media and incorporate different visual elements such as colour, line and tone. They will also evaluate and appreciate how art impacts on society by talking and writing about artists and designers work and sometimes about their own work in context.

Teaching & Learning Environment

Environment:

The Art & Design department is a stimulating and lively environment.

There are three teaching areas in a purpose built open plan environment, two of which have computer suites, also there is a kiln room for firing clay work and another general materials store. Achievement and interesting work is always celebrated through regular updates of displays in classroom, adjacent corridor and whole school display boards. The environment is very public due to the open plan layout. Visitors, subject – teachers and pupils are able to see work in progress.

Courses:

Courses are planned and reviewed on a yearly basis to allow new projects or ideas to be used by class teachers. We also try to incorporate live projects and competitions if and when appropriate.

Activities and Ethos:

Learners participate in painting drawing, 3D clay work, printmaking and all areas of the design process.  Learning experiences takes into consideration each pupil’s needs and abilities, while having high expectations of all. Learning experiences are designed to offer challenge, progression, relevance and personal expression.

Learners are encouraged to explore a broad range of techniques, processes and materials and are encouraged to take responsibility for their work which is kept in a personalised folder stored in an allocated space within your class area. During lunchtimes pupils are given opportunity to come in to the department to work independently.

Learners develop self-confidence by sharing their work through sharing, to discuss the progress of their work and develop ways to improve their work.
