The staff of St. Joseph’s Primary and Family Learning Centre has been working with Kirkmichael Community Development Group over the last few months to get a new ‘Meet and Eat’ programme for the elderly in the local community developed at St. Joseph’s Family Learning Centre. Wednesday 12 October, 2016 saw the launch of this excellent new initiative with the helpers of the Community Development Group bringing in the required food and setting up beautifully presented tables for the elderly to come along and enjoy some sandwiches, baking and a blether.
The whole session was overseen by the Family Centre’s new Childcare and Education Worker, Donna Stevens. Donna has recently taken up post in the Family Learning Centre and is building on the great work started by Jeanette McGourlay over the last three years. Donna has now also organised a number of other community events which are set to take place in the Family Learning Centre for the younger members of the community on other afternoons of the week.
Some senior members of staff along with Councillor Aileen Morton joined the elderly for a cup of tea on this their first event. The Head Teacher was treated to stories of Kirkmichael in the past and enjoyed viewing family photographs of the Meet and Eat participants. A great start to what is set to be a regular Wednesday event for the elderly of the local community here at St. Joseph’s.
