P7 had a very exciting afternoon with some S6 students from James Young High School (JYHS) today. We were lucky enough to spend the afternoon being scientists! The S6 students shared their knowledge of the scientific method and helped us to write up an aim, hypothesis, method and conclusion for our experiment. The focus was the impact exercise has on the heart rate. We took our resting pulse and compared this to our pulse after completing different exercises. We are really looking forward to them coming back next week to do some more, possibly messy, experiments!

Cool Creatures is coming to P7!
We are really looking forward to Cool Creatures coming to P7 on Wednesday the 17th of June. We chose to spend the money we raised in our bake sale on this as it something we are interested in and ties in well with our science topic on living things. We will share photos and our experiences with you next week!
The Lighthouse Keeper’s Rescue
In primary 2 and primary 2/1 we have really enjoyed learning about lighthouses and are sad to see this topic come to an end. To celebrate all our learning we plan on preparing and eating our own Mr. Grinling picnic. Primary 2b have already had theirs and enjoyed learning and developing their food technology skills. Primary 2a and primary 2/1 will have their picnic on Thursday 4th June.
We have been learning all about forces using The Lighthouse Keeper’s Rescue as inspiration. After an afternoon of exploration we were able to say that the harder you push something the further it will go. Also, to celebrate all of our learning we enjoyed an activity afternoon which encompassed all of our knoweldge and previous learning. It was so much fun to experiment using the circuits, pulleys, floating and sinking, magnets, healthy eating and using the technology to build our own unique lighthouse.
Have a look at our pictures of our great experiment afternoon!
The Lighthouse Keeper’s Tea
Primary 2 and 2/1 have been busy in their topic learning this week. We have been examining the Eatwell Plate. We were able to identify foods from each of the main food groups and reflect upon our own lunch. Using an interactive game we were able to create a healthy lunch which was balanced and in line with what we had learned from the Eatwell Plate. As well as a healthy lunch we used our class shop to buy healthy foods to make a healthy dinner.
We continued with our water activity and completing the challenge of using plasticine to create a surf board which floats. In language we designed a poster which reflected our knowledge of water safety. We have had another fun packed learning week!
Life of a butterfly
As part of our Scottish wildlife challenge, we have been exploring the wonderful life of the butterfly. We have been able to watch our caterpillars grow and grow and are watching out for them making their cocoon. In our group time we watched a video on the lifecycle and tried to remember lots of facts to put into a book. We shared our ideas, drew our own symmetrical butterflies and decided on a design for our page. We have also read ‘The very hungry caterpillar’. We saw the caterpillar munch through lots of food so it can grow big and strong to turn into a butterfly.
The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch
This week Primary 2 and Primary 2/1 have been investigating floating and sinking. We were able to select objects from around the classroom and place them in the water to find out if they would float or sink. Once we had selected our objects we would discuss our hypothesis giving reasons why we thought they would either float or sink. We were able to determine that objects which had air in them and were made from plastic would float, if objects were made from metal they would sink, also we discovered the objects we used made from foam would float at first before sinking after soaking up some water. We also discovered that it did not matter on the size of the object, it depended upon how heavy it was.
P2a even took their experiments outside with Mrs McNaughton to explore objects in the playground to see if they would float or sink!
Look out for our beautiful lighthouses making their way home with us. We have been very creative bees and put our final touches to them, they look delightful.
We are having so much fun!
Primary 5 in Amazonia
Primary 5 had a fantastic day at Amazonia, where they experienced what the Amazon Rainforest is like. They had the opportunity to see some of the animals found in the Amazon Rainforest, some of them up close in the handling sessions! Primary 5a had the chance to carefully handle a tarantula, a python and hissing cockroaches, whereas Primary 5b could handle a corn snake, a gecko and the hissing cockroaches. It was an amazing start to our South America topic.
Spring cleaning the garden
Mini Beasts
The children in the nursery have just started to investigate the world of Mini Beasts. We have been looking closely at how each beast moves: do they have wings to fly? do they jump? do they wriggle on their tummy or do they have legs?
We have also renovated our bug hotel and have taken advantage of the amazing weather by getting outside with a magnifying glass to go on a bug hunt.
We have also looked at lots of non-fiction books on mini beasts and discussed how they are differnet from our story books.
Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch
In primary 2 and primary 2/1 there has been a buzz of excitement this week for the beginning of a brand new topic! We were all so excited and happy to discover our new topic is The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. So far, this week we have spent time discussing what we know already and what we would like to find out and which activities would make this topic super interesting. Primary 2b investigated the use of pulleys, primary 2/1 created lighthouses using technology and primary 2a spent some time outside using chalk to create a lighthouse picture.
