P6 Weekly Blog

Last week we very extremely lucky to get such terrific weather for our trip along the River Almond! We started our trip at Almondell Country Park in East Calder where we drew a picture of the river and made notes about the features of the river. We then went to see the River Almond at Cramond and made a note of the river at this point and compared it to our observations at Almondell.  Then we walked along the river to the estuary at Cramond.

Bem-vindo ao Brasil!

Brazil has come to Primary 1! Barnaby Bear met a new friend on his travels – a little girl called Cidinha! We have been working very hard to transform our house corner into the little village where she lives. We worked well as a team and each had our own special job. (Well done to Murron who drew a life-size Cidinha all by herself!) We can’t wait to play with Barnaby in our version of Ludovico village! Fly in on your way past to take a peek!

Até a próxima vez … (Until next time…)

Primary 5 Weekly Blog

Interdisciplinary Learning

This week we have been learning more about Kenya and how many layers of clothing you would have to wear to climb up Mount Kenya. You would also need to take suncream 8)

Art

Last week we were so busy working that we didn’t manage to blog! We were comparing trees in Scotland and Kenya for an art task. Here are a few of our favourite comparison pictures.

Literacy

For writing last week we wrote Weather Forecasts for Scotland and Kenya, comparisng the weather over a 5 day period. This week we used this learning to write an imaginative story set in Kenya, that included both facts about Kenya and clues about the weather. We also set a personal target and assessed our story against this target. Some of us met our target and some have a bit more work to do.

Numeracy

In maths we have been continuing to work on adding – and the cuboids and spheres have been developing our understanding of the upstairs downstairs method. Pyramids have been focussing on mental adding and can now add on in 2, 5, 10, 9, 11, 25, 50 and 100 from single-digit numbers.

Health & Wellbeing

We are continuing to learn football skills in P.E. and even managed a game of 5 a-side. We are developing our teamwork skills and out listening skills through our P.E. lessons.

***Awards went to Shay for improved handwriting; Cameron for mental maths and Nia for participating in an important ice-skating event*** Well done and remember that awards are handed out every week!

Hope you all have a lovely weekend,

Miss Anderson and P5

P3 with a Chef!

Last week a Chef (Mr Mellor) made ice cream in our classroom and we got to taste it. It was amazing!  He let us ask him questions on how to make food. He told us recipes.

My favourite bit was:

The Eco Factor

Have you been practising your entry for the Eco Talent show next week? The Eco Committee will be hosting the Eco Factor and judging the best two entries from each class to find the best Junior and Senior Eco acts in school.  In class Auditions will be held very soon – the Big Final is on Thursday 20th at Assembly. Remember, if you want to win, your act MUST contain and very clear ECO message…

Primary 2

Last week we made hedgehogs out of clay and then we made a simple flowchart to give instructions for how to make one.  Next week we are going to paint our hedgehogs to add them to our woodland display table.  This week in art we used wax resist techniques to create images of seaside creatures, shells and seaweed and according to P2 our display looks fab.

In maths we have been learning to count in 2’s, 5’s from any number using the strategy of nodding on the number and then counting on using the correct number of fingers.  We will now try to count in 10’s.  We have also been using the Ten Frame Towers game to make towers of number bonds to 10.  The children liked this game because they could easily see the numbers that would fit together to make ten.

Primary 4’s Fishy Day Out

Primary 4 attended a Seafood in Schools workshop, finding out about our Scottish fish and how they get to our plates. We also got to sample lots of different types of fish too!

Here are some of the things we had to say about our trip:

CJ: I liked trying the fish. Now I know I like it.

Angel: I learnt that there are 65 different types of fish in Scotland.

Samantha: I liked it when we saw the crab.

Ella: My favourite bit was making the smoked mackerel dip because it tastes AMAZING!

Donatella: I learnt that we have farms to grow mussels and oysters.

Hayden: I learnt that the boats that catch fish are called trawlers.

Sophie: I liked trying the fish and looking at the sea creatures.

More photos of the day to follow!

P6 Weekly Blog

Last week we were very lucky because we were invited to Broxburn Academy for a science and technology day.  As part of the science investigations we used microscopes to view plant cells, we made fizz pop rockets, worked with ooze, measured our heart beat and pulse rate and made a balloon hovercraft.

In CDT we had to design and create a skyscraper in our groups.  We also got to meet other children who will be going to Broxburn Academy with us when we go into S1.

Last week we started our new topic about rivers and we have learnt all of the vocabulary assosiated with rivers eg tribulary, meander, mouth, source and estuary. Why not test us at home to find out what this vocabulary means! We are looking forward to our trip on Wednesday!

Barnaby Bear is off to Brazil

Primary 1 are very excited! Barnaby Bear received two tickets: one to travel to a hot place, and the other to travel to a cold place! Primary 1/2 chose the cold ticket and will be learning more about Russia. We chose the hot ticket and will be learning more about Brazil! Barnaby Bear will be flying out to meet children in Russia and Brazil and see how their lives are compared to our own!

But, before Barnaby Bear can go anywhere.. there’s packing to be done! We will be writing a list of things he needs to take to Brazil to make sure he doesn’t forget anything. Stay tuned for more!

Adeus por enquanto! (Goodbye for now)
