Learning & Teaching Workshop: Emotion Works

At the start of every day each class does an emotional check. This gives children the opportunity to talk with an adult about any worries.  The children have the opportunity to check in during the day if something crops up.  Throughout the school the number of emotional vocabulary increases with each stage.

As a school we use the emotion works programme and discuss emotions through characters in books and films.

In nursery we begin by using some simple vocabulary to describe emotions with images and stories to illustrate.  As we move through the school the vocabulary increases and we introduce the concepts of triggers, behaviours, body sensations, regulation strategies, intensity and influences.

Learning & Teaching Workshops: Maths & Numeracy

When introducing a new concept we always start with concrete items. In these pictures the concrete items we are using are the Dienes blocks of 1000’s, 100’s , 10’s and 1’s. We use the place value grids to display the concrete items correctly. At the same time we write what the abstract calculation looks like. By doing this we are covering the 3 aspects of CPA teaching: concrete / pictorial / abstract.
