P3 Weekly Reflection 16.11.18

This week we have been having discussions about presenting a positive attitude to our learning.  We have been talking about why it is important that we come to school ready to learn and why we need to learn to manage distractions so we can focus on our tasks.  Next week in class we will have the target ‘To follow instructions first time’ so that we are ready for learning and not wasting precious time.

Lakshya enjoyed writing counting poems this week.  We had to think of rhyming words and try to use these in our poems, it was not as easy as you might think.

Anna liked watching the film clip about Joseph Lister when he invented antiseptic.  It is thanks to him that we can go in for operations and come out without infections.

Kayden enjoyed science with Mrs Fraser.  The children are learning about energy and the effect of cutting down lots of trees.  Some great discussion was had.

We enjoyed ending our week on a high by watching the Primary 5 assembly on Harry Potter, what an amazing effort from the children in P5.

Have a lovely weekend.

P3 Weekly Reflection 9.11.18

One of the main highlights this week has been developing our understanding of tessellations.  We drew round 2D shapes to create our own tessellation patterns.  Some people chose to colour theirs using felt pens while others used paint in the primary colours.  We have been looking for examples of tessellations around the school and wonder how many patterns you will find at home.

We have also been thinking about number patterns and have been learning how to identify the rule for given patterns.  We know that if the numbers increase then we are adding or multiplying and if the numbers are decreasing we need to subtract or divide.  Perhaps you could write some patterns at home for your child to continue?

On Monday Emma M, gave an excellent explanation to the class of who Guy Fawkes is and why we celebrate Bonfire Night.  The children were very interested in this and we had an informative discussion.  We also talked about Firework Safety and wrote our own Firework acrostic poems.  The children worked really hard on these and it is hoped that we can redraft these next week so we can display them in our new reading area for everyone to read.

This week the children have been excited to purchase a poppy and have been learning about why we wear poppies at this time of year and why we celebrate Remembrance Day.  This learning was reinforced during an interesting assembly with Mr Balaj today.  We will conclude our learning on Tuesday with a visit to the local church to see the lovely memorial that has been created by members of the parish.

What a busy week it has been, with lots of excitement for Halloween.

Our literacy has had a focus on Halloween as we read some stories about The Clever Cat and The Bubbling Cauldron and wrote our own fictional stories by rolling a dice to choose the setting, character and prop. The children wrote fantastic stories using very creative ideas.

Darcy enjoyed our art activity this week where we were tearing pieces of paper and sticking them onto a Halloween themed shape.

Kayden reminded us about M. C. Escher who we learned about in Maths when we were thinking about tiling patterns.  We created our own tessellations using Tessellation Creator on Topmarks website, perhaps you can have your own go?

This week we started our new class topic, Inventors.  We learned about the Wright Brothers, Ruth Handler, Alexander Graham Bell, Steve Jobs and Mary Anderson.  Do you know what these people invented?  Jarrad particularly enjoyed watching the film about Alexander Graham Bell ‘accidentally’ inventing the telephone.  Over the coming weeks we will be working together in groups to research some other inventors who have been influential in Scottish history.

Kaitlyn said she enjoyed singing and dancing to The Skeleton Dance in music.  We had to listen to the lyrics and fill in the missing words on our activity sheet.  It was a very catchy song.  Rohan preferred listening to The Monster Mash.  Lakshya also enjoyed The Monster Mash and liked listening to spot the rhyming words.

Joe said he enjoyed having fun with his friends at the disco.

Wishing you all a relaxing weekend!

This week saw the children enjoying their new reading area, we hope we can use this area to increase personal enjoyment in reading.  We also started our Book of the Week presentations and Darcy shared Diary of a Wimpy Kid Double Down by Jeff Kinney.  She thought this was a good choice as it is a book that is funny and will appeal to everyone.

Kayden enjoyed number work this week. Luke N enjoyed learning about the Wellbeing Indicators and having to thinking of his own images to represent these.  The children will be learning more about the Wellbeing Wheel over the coming weeks.  Finn says an easy way to remember it is by remembering the word SHANARRI which stands for Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible and Included.

Joe said his highlight was when we wrote summaries of our learning about the Food and Farming topic.  All of the children were impressed by how much we had could remember.

Lakshya particularly enjoyed our spelling task this week when we worked with a partner to practise our words using beanbags.  The children had to pass the beanbag as they said a letter to spell out the word.  This week we have been revising rules about plurals.

Next week we will begin our new topic on Inventors and we will be thinking about some spooky writing for Halloween.

Have a lovely weekend.

I can’t quite believe we’re at the end of term already, what a busy term it’s been.  This week has been no exception!  We baked bannocks and butter on Monday, had a visitor on Tuesday who was watching our Number Talks lesson, we played some great games with Miss Donald in PE on Thursday and then celebrated Harvest at the Church service.  Here are some of the children’s highlights this week:-

Kaitlyn “Making the bread on Monday and the picture we did in Art”

William “I enjoyed doing symmetry in Art when we drew the other half of our faces.”

Elisha “Making the bread and the line drawing to complete my portrait.”

Emma F “I enjoyed filling in the missing numbers on the number lines.”

Finn “I liked drawing the other part of the face and I liked Sebastian’s, it was really good.”

Harris St “Making the rest of the tractors.”

Luke N “I enjoyed going to church.”

Lakshya “I liked the symmetry.”

Joe “I liked when we were sharing our learning.”

Olly enjoyed when Emma gave out sweets to celebrate her birthday.  He thought this was a good example of compassion.

This week Anna lost her tooth and the children were interested to find out what would happen if we left it in some coke.  After three days the children were horrified with the affect the coke had on the tooth.  We discussed why we should only drink fizzy drinks occasionally and why it is important to brush our teeth properly when we’ve been drinking them.  William’s tooth is getting ready to fall out and he would like to see what happens to it if we put it in iron bru.  Perhaps we can pick up on this learning after the holiday.

Thanks to everyone for their continued support in their child’s learning and for attending learning consultations this week.  I wish you all a safe and happy October break and look forward to hearing all about it when the children return on Tuesday 23rd October.

P3 Weekly Reflection

This week in Primary 3 we have been learning about foods that can be grown at home.  The children were excited to share the foods they grow at their own homes and we went into the garden to consider the foods grown in the greenhouse.  Angus said he enjoyed this learning and told us he grows apples and pears at home.  William said he enjoyed looking at the pictures of commonly grown foods and guessing which plants they were.  Joe told us he enjoyed writing about foods that can be grown at home.

In literacy this week we have been continuing our learning about plurals and learning the rules for words that end in ‘y’.  Luke N said he enjoyed the activities we did to learn these rules.  We also learned about the layout of a formal letter when we wrote thank you letters to New Lanark for our recent visit.  Writing his thank you letter was a highlight for Harris St.  In reading we have been looking at asking good questions to encourage better discussion.

Maths this week was all about patterns with numbers and we played lots of games using number squares and loop cards.  Finn and Kayden said they enjoyed the loop card game and Mrs Clyne was impressed when we knocked 3 mins off our last time!  Rhys said he particularly enjoyed the number problems which we tackled for Smart Start.

This week saw us design our Christmas cards for the parent council’s fundraiser.  These will now be sent away and the children’s proofs will be returned in due course.  Emma F, Jarrad and Lakshya all said they enjoyed designing their own Christmas card and we look forward to seeing them when they arrive.

In drama this week we have been practising our mime skills and recreating characters from the story of The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde.  We learnt that it can be quite tricky to convey a message through mime alone.  Anna said she really enjoyed the drama and liked playing one of the children from the story.

In technology Kalista said it was fun making the tractors and working collaboratively with her peers.

This week sees the children bring their jotters home so you are able to discuss your child’s learning with them before you attend learning consultations next week.  I would urge you to complete the feedback form and return the jotters to school on Monday.

Have a lovely weekend.

P3 Weekly Reflection 28.09.18

This week our highlight was sharing in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning as we raised funds for MacMillian Cancer Support.  Thanks to all who gave so generously.

The children participated in some great discussions this week around our Farming topic.  We have been learning how different plants and animals are farmed and about farming through the seasons.  Rhys said he particularly enjoyed watching the video programmes about life on a farm during the summer and autumn.  Next week we will learn about life on the farm through the winter and spring.  Luke N said before the video he didn’t know that chickens lived in “little cages”.  He thinks it is better to have free range chickens so the animals have space to move about.  Luke C enjoyed learning about the different names for pigs; weaners, baconers and porkers.  Emma M was intrigued to find out that deer are killed at only 14 months for their meat.  We learned that deer meat is called venison.  Kaitlyn commented on the fact that deer can grunt, we didn’t expect them to make this noise, we thought it sounded funny.

In problem solving we continued to develop our use of lists by making tables to work out possible scores for a dart game.  Rhys said he enjoyed this activity and was proud of himself as Mrs Clyne praised him for supporting his peers in their learning.  There was a lot of super discussion during this task.

Some of us received our signed books from Elizabeth McKay yesterday which we had been eagerly awaiting.  Olly said he enjoyed writing a letter to New Lanark to thank them for allowing us to attend the Book Festival.  Most of the children enjoyed the Annie McLeod Experience best.  Perhaps some of you will be able to visit New Lanark as a family and learn more about Annie McLeod.

Have a lovely weekend. Mrs Clyne and family are off to explore the National Museum of Rural Life.

P3 Weekly Reflection 21.09.18

Although this has been a short week we have still done lots of great learning.  We had loads of fun when we joined with P4 to take part in a workout to raise funds for Lepra.  Thank you to all those who made a donation, it is much appreciated.  If you still have money to return please send it in to the school office as soon as possible please.  In P.E. we have been practising our large ball skills with a particular focus on dribbling the ball with both our hands and feet.  Mrs Clyne was very impressed with how well we managed to keep the ball under control.

In Maths, we used base 10 materials to explore place value of 2-digit and 3-digit numbers.  We are becoming more confident to identify the value of a digit within these numbers.  Perhaps you could test us when we spot numbers in the local environment?

In reading we have been learning about fact and opinion and while Mrs Clyne led the guided reading sessions we were asked to make up our own facts and opinions about Scotland.  Anna told us that Scotland is a country;  Emma M said that Scotland is at the top of the U.K. and Kaitlyn reminded us that Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland.  Most of us thought that Scotland was a cold and wet country.

During our food and farming learning this week we had an interesting discussion about the source of our food.  We worked in groups to sort foods into those which came from plants and those which came from animals.  We were a little bit confused about chocolate and had a good debate.  Kalista told us that chocolate is made from cocoa beans which come from trees but Kayden and Jarrad said that chocolate has milk in it which comes from a cow.  We decided that it would go in the middle as it came from both sources.

Have a good weekend and enjoy chatting with the children about their learning.
