Burns Poetry Competition

The children have chosen the poem that they would like to recite for this years competition. They have all been given a copy and told to keep it safe!

Can I ask that the children have their poem ready for recital to the class for Monday 22nd January, as the class will be voting for the best 3 competitors to reach the Final.

I have included links to the poems in case they lose their copy, or forget to take it home.

Any questions then please let me know.

Happy New Year

Welcome back to Primary 5, they seem to have had a brilliant holiday!

Today it was my turn to bring something for Show and Tell…

Mrs Warrender!!!

Mrs Warrender came to visit the school, before she returns to Australia in a couple of weeks. The children were so excited and had lots of fantastic questions to ask her. Questions included ….Have you been bitten by any insects? Have you seen any crocodiles? What is you favourite Australian animal that you have seen? and What is your house like?

We will try and keep in touch with Mrs Warrender and maybe we can email her and ask about the learning the children do in Australia!

Lego Challenge 2 – update!

Yesterday we designed and made some amazing marble mazes using our Lego blocks. Lots of collaboration, problem solving and testing of designs were carried out! The children thoroughly enjoyed the activity and these STEM challenges are proving very popular in P5!

Here are some pictures of the children testing each other’s designs.

Ask the children about the roles given during Lego Challenges and the rules they need to follow to ensure the challenge is successful!

Well done P5!

Christmas Stars

The little elves of P5 have been designing and creatively decorating beautiful wooden stars to take home for Christmas. We have packaged them up ready for the elves to take home next week. What a crafty bunch I have!

Mrs Taylor and the P5 elves …..ho, ho, ho!

Lego Challenge

We have began our weekly Lego Challenge sessions yesterday, which are part of different STEM activities that will be taking place during the course of the school year. The children will be focusing on their communication, collaboration and listening skills during these sessions but will allow them to use creativity, problem solving and many other skills for their life-long learning.

The children also self-assessed their work and gave themselves targets for the next session. I can’t wait to see what the next session creates!!

Ask your child to explain what the criteria of the task was, and the skills their group demonstrated  to complete the challenge.

Here are some pictures of the groups and their models…

An Enterprising Book Week!

Primary 5 have been very busy this week, enjoying Scottish Book Week!

The focus book has been Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone and children have enjoyed daily read-a-long sessions as well as using Venn Diagrams, drawing maps, designing their own witch or wizard, creating and solving some Voldemort maths problems and becoming reporters for The Daily Prophet!! Pheeeew….and it hasn’t stopped there!

The children have also managed to make their Snowman Soup cups, ready for the LVPS Christmas  Fayre. They are looking fantastic and I’m sure they’ll sell like hot cakes (not too hot though as we may melt the snowmen ha ha ha)

Our week will culminate in Character Dress up Day and I can’t wait to see which characters will be entering into P5 on Friday morning.

Children In Need Bake Sale

The children spent time last week working on their skills in numeracy and understanding Money, in preparation for last Friday’s Children In Need Bake Sale. They also looked at advertising and how to best to promote the product they were selling.

Primary 5 did an amazing job of advertising, organising, selling and buying so many of the amazing baked goods that were very kindly donated. Final amount is still to be confirmed but I can tell it was a huge success.

Thank you to everyone who supported Primary 5 in this mini-project, we are very grateful as always.
