This week in Primary 6…

This week we learned how to set up a fish tank.  We had to research to find out what equipment we needed and what steps we had to take to set it up successfully.  After that we wrote instructions for how to set up the tank.  In the afternoon we followed these instructions.

“We washed out the gravel and put it in the tank carefully.” – Leon

“I really enjoyed washing the gravel and liked learning about all the different types of goldfish.” – Rowan

“Then we added tap water and dechlorinator. ” – Cameron

“We had to measure the length, width and height of the tank.  Then we multiplied them.  We used 5 whiteboards to work out the answer.  This was to calculate the volume of the tank.  We then knew we had to put in 3 capfuls of dechlorinator.” – Cameron & Leon

“I actually really enjoyed the maths!” – Leon

“It was hard but we both did it together and that made it better.” – Cameron

“Next we attached the filter.” – Logan F

“I had to attach the flow director and then stick the filter to the side of the tank.” – Logan Y & Callum

“The filter cleans the tank.  It takes in the dirty water and puts out clean water.” – Charlie

“I attached the tubing to the air pump and Cade and Silvester helped to put it in the tank.” – Kyle

“The air pump puts little bubbles into the tank to put oxygen into the water which the fish need to breathe.” – Murray

“The fish have gills to breathe.” – Zoe

Our tank is now ready to be decorated.

“You can’t just dump fish in the tank though.  You have to float the bag on the top of the water so that it gets up the right temperature.” – Charlie

We’ll be visiting a pet shop soon after the holidays and we can’t wait!

Our penpal letters finally arrived from Raleigh, North Carolina!  We have started our first draft of replies and will finish them after the holiday.

“I enjoyed writing back to my penpal, Samiyah.  I really like her personality!” – Katy

“My penpal moved school after the teacher posted our letters.  But a new pupil has joined the class so I will be writing to her.” – Zoe

“My penpal’s birthday is on New Year’s Day!” – Murray

“I enjoyed writing to my penpal, Damico, because he’s into tech like me!” – Calum

“I really liked writing to my penpal because it means we’ll get to know someone else!” – Hayley B
