Learning in P1

Hello everyone.  P1 have been very busy this week.  We’re very excited to see if our sunflower seeds will grow.  We’ve been learning about how to plant a seed, what a seed needs to grow and talking about living and non-living things.

In maths, we have been learning to count forwards and backwards to 20,  forming all our numbers correctly and sequencing.

We were excited to bring our first reading books home. (Please ensure all books are returned to school on a Friday morning).

We’re continuing to learn to write with capital letters, full stops and finger spaces for all our sentences.

We’ve enjoyed being out in the sunshine this week and hope you have a lovely weekend.

Primary 2/1 – This week’s learning from 1st March

Dear Primary 2/1,

Thank you for a great week of listening and hard work.  You are all very much enjoying being back and enjoying your familiar space in the classroom and seeing all of your friends.

In Literacy this week, the Primary 1s have been working hard on learning their digraphs  sounds – oo, ee, ie .

Primary 2s have been learning more about what makes a sentence a question and in writing they used their success critieria list to help them write the perfect questions for Willie Wonka.

In Numeracy, Primary 1s completed more work on subtraction and were also introduced to Fractions; learning about a ‘whole’ and a ‘half’ and what makes a ‘half’ (it has to be exactly the same size as the other half’).

Primary 2s did more learning on missing subtrahends, addends and number sequencing.

On Thursday we had World Book Day activities and the children very much enjoyed listening to stories being read to them by P7 pupils via Teams.  P2/1 also watched a video about a Book Cover Designer and they learned lots about what he does.  P2/1 enjoyed completing his task of designing their own Book Cover and the book was to be about them.  They also enjoyed making their own mini-book from paper and completing a front cover, mini-story and illustrations.

Primary 2/1 are very much enjoying their Topic – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  They are also enjoying learning about Plants in Science and learning some Bible Stories in RME with links into Technology.

Thank you for sending in photos of your favourite book.

Have a great weekend, Primary 2/1.

Mrs Meikle

P1: A Message from West Lothian Libraries

Message from Helene Rennie from West Lothian Libraries:

As we approach some lockdown restrictions being eased and your services resuming in some way I am contacting you to advise about the digital resources we have available free to children who are members of West Lothian libraries.  I would be grateful if you could share this information with parents and carers please.

Every child in West Lothian can and should be a West Lothian library member and we endeavour to engage with and register as many children as possible as part of the ECALM initiative.  However, if a child is not already a library member and their parents/carers are interested in their child becoming a library member then they can simply complete the online application here: http://bit.ly/Join-WL-libraries they will then be sent their child’s membership information and will have access to our digital resources and all of our libraries when we reopen.

During the lockdown we have significantly increased our collection of children’s e-Books and e-Audio books.  These can be accessed here: https://bit.ly/WLlibebooksChildren

We have also purchased e-Books and e-audio books which allow multiple downloads, so there are no waiting lists for these.  The latest addition is Flying Fergus, The Great Cycle Challenge by Sir Chris Hoy and this can be accessed here :https://bit.ly/FlyingFergusTgcc

The e-audio books are particularly good for younger children providing them with their own personal story times, often with famous actors or even the authors themselves narrating.

If you require any assistance on the use of these resources or library membership applications please do not hesitate to contact me. Email: helene.rennie@westlothian.gov.uk
