Primary 3a Number Talks

This week we have been learning about the value of numbers. We used the 100 square on the smart board and had to click on the correct number. If the number had 5 tens and 3 ones we would click on 53. Once we were confident in this we moved onto numbers to 1000. For this we used the place value flip chart. If the number had 3 hundreds, 4 tens and 3 ones we had to make the chart read 348. We are going to keep working on this next week.

P3B Showing Creativity in Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been using our new geo boards to help us learn multiplication. We always use a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach and we talk about the groups we make to show a calculation.

We have been using the geo boards to make arrays. Last week, we worked hard to make groups of 10 and we could talk confidently about the arrays we made. The photo at the bottom shows Finlay’s creativity with the geo boards. He used the elastic bands to show a calculation in a different way and he enjoyed sharing his strategy. This started a new trend in class as his peers started using the boards in the same way. Well done everyone!

P.E in Primary 3B

We have been working hard to develop ball control skills in P.E. We enjoyed taking our P.E outside on Wednesday for the first time in a while. We used the basketballs to bounce to a partner and the aim of the game was to try and make sure the ball only bounced in the hoop once.

We had a discussion about the skills we were using and we all agreed that teamwork was one of the most important skills. We also identified “adapting” as a skill we used as we had to use a growth mind-set, especially if our partner won more points than us. We are excited to use our skills to play team games.

P3a Handwriting

Every Friday we work on our handwriting. We practice our letters lots of different ways – white boards, smart board, jotters and wipe clean boards.  We work on our letter formation so that we do it correctly in all of our work. Later on this year we will start to join letters so really need to be writing them the correct way.

P3a Book Week

During book week we took part in lots of great activities. We received visits from several secret readers. We went to the library and got our Read, Write, Count bags and a book from the Queen.  We also listened to stories and read with each other.  We took part in the Book Week bookmark competition by drawing our favourite animals character from a book. It has been a brilliant week.

Literacy in P3B

We love a challenge in P3B! This morning, we took part in a new learning activity to practise reading and writing our Fry’s words. We learned how to create a word search. We each created our own word search, however; we worked with a partner and Miss Marra saw lots of great teamwork. In Smart Start tomorrow, we are going to ask another group to find the words. We enjoyed our learning and would like to do more word searches to practise reading and writing our words.

Word Detectives in P3B

Our new phonics sound in Literacy this week is the “sh” sound. This morning, we had the opportunity to be word detectives to help us spell “sh” words. We worked with our partner to spell “sh” words using the letters written on the sticky notes. We challenged ourselves and some of even used extra letters to extend our words.

We were also very excited to work in randomised groups for the first time. This means we didn’t choose our partner and Miss Marra didn’t choose our partner either. All our names are in a tub, and we picked a name card out. The name on the card was our partner. It was exciting to have a surprise when we found out who we were going to be working with. We were all engaged in our learning and on task. Miss Marra was very proud of us all.

P3 Literacy

Something strange was in our mystery box this morning. A few of us tried to guess. Some said a number 2, which was quite a good guess. Others couldn’t find anything. After lots of discussion round what sort of shape it was, Harris worked out it was a question mark. We looked at the shape then tried to draw a few ourselves. We were allowed to draw it on our desks!! Then we thought about words that could be used at the start of a question. We wrote them on our desks too and then discussed them as a class. Next we had to think of questions we could ask, using these words.

P3B Number Talks

We have only been back at school for a week and a half, but we have been working so hard. In Number Talks, we have been learning to combine numbers. We used a Smart board game called “Dreambox Teacher Tools” to talk about the different ways numbers were represented on ten frames. We started with numbers to 20 and then moved on to numbers within 100. It was interesting to talk about our strategies and share our thoughts on other ways to make that number. We tried to identify the most efficient strategy.

We have also started learning multiplication this week. We started with the mystery box and found counting sticks inside. We used the sticks to demonstrate our knowledge of the two times table. Miss Marra then wrote a calculation on the board “3 x 2” and we worked in pairs to make this calculation using concrete materials.

We then drew our strategy and wrote it down in our Maths jotters. Some of us then worked on the three times table as a challenge.

P3a Numeracy

Each week we take part in lots of different Numeracy activities to help us develop our skills. We share our strategies and help each other try them out. This week in our Number of the Day task we had to work out sums with the answer 39. We came up with addition subtraction, multiplication and someone even came up with a sum involving division.
