Learning in P2A

‘We were learning about money. We were counting in 2ps, 5ps and 10ps’ Piper.

‘We were learning about doubles in maths’ Harrison and Abbie.

‘I liked learning about our weather. We learned that on the news they use symbols to show the weather.’ Abbie.

‘They use numbers too’ Rudi S.

‘I liked doing our fireworks art. We used sticks to dip in the paint and made the fireworks on the page. We used (biodegradable) glitter to make them sparkle’ William.

P3A Learning

This week we’re learning to tell the time. Some of us used Play Dough to create the hands of a clock to tell o’clock & half past times. Others tested each other telling quarter past & quarter to using the clock faces. Some were working on changing between analogue & digital times. We also used the laptops to test our knowledge.

This week we started learning to use questions marks. First we practiced writing them, then we had to think about question words. Next we looked at a picture and worked with a random partner to come up and write down questions about it. Lastly we became Question Mark Detectives and hunted for question marks in our reading books.

In Art we thought about the colours of leaves we see just now and then created Autumn pictures.

Maths Week in P3A

We were very lucky during Maths Week to have two visitors come in to tell us how they use Maths in their daily work. Mr Malik is a software engineer and uses Maths all the time when he is writing code. He even created a game to show us how the software worked. Then we heard from Callum who runs a company involving small animals. He uses Maths each day for things like measuring how much food or water to give the animals and record the temperatures in the cages.

In class we worked on our times tables with a random partner, using arrays to help us.

We were also very lucky to go on a trip to Almond Valley Heritage Centre to take part in a Maths Trail. Here we found out how the farm used Maths in the past. We met the Miller who used to water wheel to power the wheel to grind the flour. Then the baker had to weigh the flour to make bread. We walked round the farm counting lots of different animals. This helped us gain knowledge for our Topic on Food and Farming.

Learning in P2/1

Last week we were visited by a lady from The Dogs Trust.

‘We learned how to be safe around dogs’ Mia.

‘We should be quiet around dogs and if they have taken one of your socks or toys tell and adult. Be gentle, they don’t want cuddles, they want a wee stroke. Leave dogs alone when they are eating.’ Kayla.

‘We were seeing what kinds of buildings were in Main Street’ Mia.

‘We drew pictures of the buildings in Main Street. We made a pictogram to show the information.’ Alexus.

‘We were playing with the parachute in PE. We had to run underneath. We made a tent and sat underneath. We sat on it to hold it down.’ Fawn.

We had fun.

Learning in P2/1

It has been a very busy few weeks in P2/1. Before the holidays we chose to learn more about Scotland. We started by finding Scotland on a World map, then a European map and then, the P2s found East Calder on a map of Scotland.

After that we thought about what we wanted to focus on. Finlay said he wanted to learn more about the bridges and rivers of Scotland. Nearly the whole class wanted to learn more about the castles of Scotland.

We had great fun using our ‘teamwork’ skills to build bridges from different materials. We presented our bridges to the class.
Our bridges had to be sturdy enough to span the two tables.

The P2s wrote information reports about bridges and the P1s wrote some sentences about the bridges we had made.
We thought it would be great to try building castles and to compare the materials we used.
We thought the Lego and the junk modelling was the best to make our castles.

In maths we have been learning about fractions. P1 were cutting items into halves and P2 were exploring halves and quarters of numbers.

We have all been learning about tally marks.
“I made ten with the pencils!”.

P3 Learning

Lots of fun learning in Primary 3 this week. We have continued to learn to use arrays to help us divide. We were trying harder calculations and working out the family sums that go with each array.

we are learning to write an explanation. This week’s title was ‘How to look after a dog. We planned our writing on Wednesday and then used our plan to write our full explanation on Thursday. We are getting much better at writing interesting sentences and some of us have started learning to write in paragraphs.

In Maths we have continued to learn about fractions. This week we used 8 cubes in two colours to make creatures and then had to record it on squared paper and come up with a fraction sentence about it ie My creature is half green and half pink. We also learned about how many cubes one quarter and three quarters are.

In topic we were learning about Roman houses. We found out about how the rich and poor Romans lived. We learned that very rich Romans had massive villas with lots of rooms, they even had slaves to look after them. We found out that some villas had a room called a ‘vomitarium’?  Ask your children what that was used for!!!!!!

P2/1

It’s been a busy week back to school in P2/1. We have been using numicon to investigate number bonds and have had fun listening to the months of the year song in maths.

We are continuing to build and blend letters to read words in our reading books and have been practising Fry’s words along with our handwriting.

This week we listened to information about two planets: Jupiter and Saturn. We enjoyed watching The Space Explorers on CBeebies and could tell the class some facts we learned.

Learning in P2/1

We have been learning about Space and wrote some facts about the moon. P2 wrote information reports and P1 wrote a sentence. We learned that the moon orbits the Earth and reflects the light of the Sun.

We have all been listening to Stick Man by Julia Donaldson this week. ‘I liked our Boost Words’. Alfie

In maths P1 were measuring using blocks, and P2 were measuring in centimetres. ‘I liked measuring the Lego’ Jenson.

The highlight of the week was watching the Christmas Panto Sleeping Beauty. ‘My favourite part was when they asked maths questions-we had to shout them out’ Leonor.

P3 Learning

This week we recapped the time work we should know from P2 of o’clock, half past & quarter past. We worked in pairs to test each other. Then we challenged each other to try to tell quarter to times. We will continue to work using analogue clocks and start to use digital times next week.

We have just started learning to write a discussion. To do this we need to think about ‘arguments for’ and ‘arguments against’. So far we have completed discussion text for the questions, ‘Should children wear school uniform?’ and, ‘Should we have a class pet?’. Next week we will be thinking about the question, ‘Should children play at school?’.

We have also been learning about using question marks and have been enjoying finding them in our reading books.

Learning in P2/1

We were lucky to be visited by Fischy Music. We had a great time in our workshop and then a concert in the afternoon. We really enjoyed dancing, singing and listening to the music played live on guitar and violin.
In art, we created a Fireworks picture. We used paints and a fork to make jagged shapes and then covered the paint in biodegradable glitter to make them sparkle like fireworks.
We discussed how to stay safe around fireworks and sparklers and learned about Guy Fawkes.

In maths, we are learning about 3D shapes. In P1 we are experimenting to see if the shapes roll, slide or stack. In P2 we are learning about the properties of 3D shapes- faces, vertices and edges.
