Book Week and WWII in P7

We were extremely luck to have Alan Hamilton visit us this week in Primary 7. He shared his experiences and knowledge of war and he let us pass around his war medals! We learned about the how WWII started; he used an interactive time lapse map to show how it spread all around the word. Alan guided us through a timeline of the events of the war, helping our chronology. He also told us some stories of his time as a pupil at East Calder Primary and linked the events of WWII to local events at the time. Alan left some books behind for us to explore during book week and we can’t wait to get reading!

Literacy in P3B

We love a challenge in P3B! This morning, we took part in a new learning activity to practise reading and writing our Fry’s words. We learned how to create a word search. We each created our own word search, however; we worked with a partner and Miss Marra saw lots of great teamwork. In Smart Start tomorrow, we are going to ask another group to find the words. We enjoyed our learning and would like to do more word searches to practise reading and writing our words.

Primary 1

This week Primary 1 have been learning all about 2D shape.  We named the shapes and used them to make shape pictures.  Some of us went outside for a Shape Hunt and we used things we found to create our own shapes.  Others took turns to use the feely bag, and, without looking, describe what the shapes were.

We continue to learn new sounds, this week o and u.  We have also been practising our Fry’s words.  Please remember to return reading books on Thursdays.  We have a limited number of books and we want everyone to be able to bring a book home weekly.

Our science learning in class is all about the weather and we have been using symbols to record the weather.  On Thursdays Mrs Beattie is in class for science and children have been learning about night and day.  This week they made sundials.

P5’s Special Visitor

Primary 5 and Mrs Campbell were delighted to welcome Alan Hamilton into school on Thursday afternoon. Alan has previously been a regular visitor to our school, working with P6s and P7s on their World War IDL contexts. He is a mine of information about WW1, WW2 and everything in between!

Alan came to speak to Primary 5 about Remembrance and gave us a real insight into the life of a soldier, from rations and trench foot to horse dung and ‘sweet pea mixture’ (ask your kids!). He brought along his own medals and some interesting artefacts to show us and also very kindly left us copies of his own sketches which he made whilst serving in Iraq.

The pupils were highly engaged in this session and understandably had many questions which Alan did his best to answer!

Word Detectives in P3B

Our new phonics sound in Literacy this week is the “sh” sound. This morning, we had the opportunity to be word detectives to help us spell “sh” words. We worked with our partner to spell “sh” words using the letters written on the sticky notes. We challenged ourselves and some of even used extra letters to extend our words.

We were also very excited to work in randomised groups for the first time. This means we didn’t choose our partner and Miss Marra didn’t choose our partner either. All our names are in a tub, and we picked a name card out. The name on the card was our partner. It was exciting to have a surprise when we found out who we were going to be working with. We were all engaged in our learning and on task. Miss Marra was very proud of us all.

Lucas was very proud of himself for creating the word “shrimp.”

P3 Literacy

Something strange was in our mystery box this morning. A few of us tried to guess. Some said a number 2, which was quite a good guess. Others couldn’t find anything. After lots of discussion round what sort of shape it was, Harris worked out it was a question mark. We looked at the shape then tried to draw a few ourselves. We were allowed to draw it on our desks!! Then we thought about words that could be used at the start of a question. We wrote them on our desks too and then discussed them as a class. Next we had to think of questions we could ask, using these words.
