P5/4C all turned out in their odd socks today to support the Anti-Bullying Alliance; they also created their own pairs of mismatched socks. A big thank you to you all for your generous donations to this very worthwhile cause.
East Calder Swim Team Success!
A huge well done to the P6 and P7 pupils who represented our school in a recent swim meet. Their relay team came first! A fantastic achievement. We are all so proud of you and your commitment to your swimming and our school. Well done!
P5B Respect Remembrance Day
Today is Remembrance Day and in P5B we showed our respects by taking part in a few activities. The whole school took part in the 2 minute silence, to pay our thoughts and respects to those brave soldiers who fought in the war and to their families who lost loved ones.
Our reading comprehension focused on Remembrance Day and asked us lots of questions about why this day is so important, why do we wear poppies etc.
Some of us enjoyed sharing stories about relatives who fought in the war.
In the afternoon, we made poppy charcoal drawings which look very effective. The children will be able to take these home tomorrow.
P4/3M
We have been learning about firework safety this week. One of our P4’s created a sparkling example of a 3D firework shown below.
P3-4 Lego Club
We had great fun completing our challenges today. We were trying to build houses and street scenes. One had a bank which had eight levels of security while another house came with a pond in it’s garden!
Phonics in P2M
We have had a very busy week in Primary 2M. We have learned more about pirates, designing our own pirate flag for Captain Abigail and finding a real pirate flag in our class. In Phonics, we were excited to use our new overlays and we used our Say, Make, Write boards to help us read, make and write our words.

Arghhhhhhhhh!
This term in P2W we are learning all about pirates. Today we were learning about famous pirates and what they did a long, long time ago. Captain Abigail set us a challenge to find out about how to become amazing pirates and we think we have got off to a great start.
We spent time this afternoon creating our own pirate names using our favourite colour and favourite animal. We created some brilliant names that made us giggle!
Next we created our own pirate puppets which we used during our Positive Play time. We had so much fun!

World War 1 and Remembrance
Primary 7/6L had an excellent workshop yesterday looking at the importance of Remembrance Day and Armistice Day. We learnt all about the Poppy and why it is a symbol of Remembrance. We also learnt a lot about World War 1. Alan Hamilton from the Royal British Legion visited our class yesterday to share with us his wealth of knowledge and personal experience in the armed forces and of East Calder Primary School and local area as a former pupil himself. Not only has Alan served in the army but he shared with us the experiences of both his great uncle who fought during World War 1 and his father who fought during World War 2. After lunch we learnt all about local people from East Calder who had been soldiers during the war and visited East Calder Cemetery to lay poppy crosses. Before leaving Alan shared with us the wonderful story of his Uncles army whistle he was given in 1916! What a journey his whistle has had! A very valuable learning experience yesterday which taught us all the importance of Remembrance Day.
NURSERY – UPCOMING DATES
18 November – Book Week Scotland
Book Week Scotland is an annual celebration of books and reading that takes place across the country. In Nursery we will be launching a few events to celebrate this.
- Caught Reading – Please take photo’s of your child(ren) at home reading in different places whether they enjoy reading in bed, the bath, in the car, in the garden. Staff will also be sharing their photo’s and we can post them on our Nursery BLOG and/or display them in the nursery. Please email them to Mrs Laing – wllesley.laing@westlothian.org.uk during Book Week Scotland.
- Big Bedtime Read – We will be relaunching our Big Bedtime Read encouraging our families to borrow our packs of books and read at bedtime. Please look out for more information during Book Week Scotland. We are looking for packs that are being borrowed just now to be returned to Nursery by the end of this week so we can prepare them for our relaunch. Many thanks for your support with this.
- Community Book Search – This is a nationwide campaign promoting literacy by finding or hiding books in your community and sharing them with your children. We will be having a used book sale in Nursery during Book Week Scotland to encourage families to get involved and purchase books to help raise funds for the Nursery. The books will include details of how to get involved. Please look out for this.
- Used Book Sale – Please support your Nursery by purchasing books to read at home or to hide as part of the Community Book Search. We will be asking for a small donation which will be used to replenish our existing library.
- Dress Up – Your children may dress up but this is entirely optional.
NURSERY – HALLOWEEN FUN!
Our children had the opportunity to experience and explore lots of Halloween play and learning last week.
The costumes were fantastic and we all had lots of fun!
