We look forward to Science with Mrs Beattie every Tuesday and this term, we have been learning about materials. One of our favourite learning activities was when Mrs Beattie asked us to use different materials to build a bridge. We had to work collaboratively to decide which materials worked best and why. We used what we know about the properties of different materials to make decisions in our groups. Mrs Beattie was very impressed with the learning conversations that were taking place. We were proud to use all the collaborative skills we have learned in class to work as a team. We listened well to each other’s ideas and we made sure everyone took part in the challenge.

We have been so busy with all our learning in Primary 2M! We have decided to blog more often so we can share all our hard work with everyone. We would also like to blog with Miss Marra so we can share how we feel about our learning.
In Literacy, we have been working hard to learn our sounds. These are the sounds we have recently been learning: au, aw, ew, nk, ng, st, ft and mp. This week, we are learning to read and write words ending with rk, nd and lt. Some of us are also learning to sound out and blend CVC words. One of our favourite learning activities in Literacy is Hangman on a white board. We enjoy learning to recognise the sounds in our words with a partner. We are also enjoying our target task because we can challenge ourselves and learn to complete a pencil activity independently.

One of our highlights of the term so far is our Topic on The Romans. We have already learned so much about Gladiator battles, Roman soldiers and life as a Roman child. One of our favourite learning activities was using paper to make a Roman fort and a Colosseum. We also learned about the toys Roman children used to play with and we found it very interesting that they often made their own toys. We worked independently or with a partner to make our own Roman toys. We made toys including figures, dolls, kites, swords, shields and toy cars.
Roman children played with many toys that we enjoy playing with. However, we were shocked to learn that Roman children were not taught about gender equality. Girls were encouraged to play with dolls and boys were encouraged to play with swords and shields to practise for future battle. We know girls and boys can play with the same toys, do the same jobs and be anything we want to be. This helped us to understand more about how different life was in Roman times. We are looking forward to learning more.

Thank you for your kind donations towards our nursery welly walks. We have raised £24.99 so far, this will be used towards purchasing more waterproof trousers for our children to wear when exploring the outdoors.
East Calder Nursery Parent Group – We have a small group of parents who are passionate and dedicated to raising more funds for the nursery to help buy further waterproof trousers as we still need to purchase another 30 pairs to enable us to take all the children outdoors together. They met up last week, in our parent room within the school to discuss future fundraising and already have a fundraising event running in Peacock’s/The Edinburgh Woolen Mill at Dobbies in Livingston. All money raised at this event will be kindly donated to our Nursery. This will run throughout the month of March, there will be fun filled activities for children and a gift wrapping service for any Mother’s Day gifts. A tombola and raffle will also run alongside this (raffle tickets can be purchased in nursery, please ask a member of staff). On Saturday 14th March children can make their own little bird house and decorate a Mother’s Day card for £2. Please pop into Dobbies Livingston to support this fantastic fundraising event and to help raise money for our nursery.
We are looking for donations towards the tombola. If you have any unwanted Christmas gifts or a bottle of wine or chocolates at home, please donate them in our basket in the main foyer at Nursery.
A new noticeboard for East Calder Nursery Parent Group is now displayed in the main foyer, please check regularly to find out about current and future fundraising events. All parents/carers and grandparents are very welcome to meet up with the group to get involved in fundraising.
Many thanks for your continued support.
Lights,Camera,Action! P7S were fortunate enough to visit Sky Academy this morning to produce their own News Report on Cyberbullying. Each group were assigned their own studio and roles. From Directors, Producers and Editors to Camera Operatives, Presenters and Reporters. Having previously worked on their brief in school the class were ready to prepare and film their report. It was great to see such amazing teamwork at work and the final cut was both informative and entertaining. Well done P7S!
Just a reminder that P4S Assembly is Friday 28th February at 9.10am. Family and friends should enter through dining hall door.
Thanks
Mrs Spence
A little reminder that our first parent group meetings will be held tomorrow and Wednesday. This will be a very informal meeting for parents and a staff member to get together and see how much interest/helpers we can gather for raising much needed funds for the Nursery.
We would love to hear your idea’s for fundraising and would be delighted if you could attend either meeting. Refreshments will be available. Please meet in the nursery and we can use the school parent room.
Tuesday 25th February – 12pm
Wednesday 26th February – 1.30pm
During our Science lessons this term we have been learning about different materials. Mrs Beattie set us a challenge to try and build our very own bridges using different materials.
Each group were given the choice between spaghetti and blue tac or cubes. By the end of the lesson we were to create our own bridges using our chosen material followed by an explanation as to which method was better and why.
We are looking forward to learning even more about materials over the course of this term!

This week we have been learning how to use a dictionary. We learnt when we would need to use a dictionary and how to use it correctly. Before we could do this we completed BBC Supermovers Alphabet dance to double check we could remember the letters in the correct order.
Miss Walkingshaw set us a challenge in pairs to see if we could find the real meaning behind words we use a lot during our learning. We had lots of fun taking part in this challenge as we were able to do it with our friends. Some of the words were tricky to find but we showed our resilience and kept on trying!
As you can tell we liked it so much we had to take another photograph to show you our smiling faces!
