Sharing the Learning P6

We would like to thank everyone who attended our Sharing the Learning session on Wednesday afternoon. We had seven stations in total,each highlighting an area of our learning this term.

Station 1 – ICT – Microbits – Exploring core programming language

Station 2 – Social Studies and ICT -Victorian Assessment using our Context Powerpoints

Station 3 – Science Creating a variety of circuits and describing the transfer of energy around the circuit

Station 4- Social Studies and Listening and Talking – West Lothian Museum Services-Sharing Victorian artefacts

Station 5- Social Studies Who am I ?- Using clues to identify famous Victorians

Station 6 HOT skills- Literacy – Creating Higher Order Thinking skills questions from a variety of texts

Station 7 A Learning Walk- Ethos – Sharing our class displays

It was great to see the class talking to a wider audience with such confidence.

East Calder Bowling Club -Community Hub visit

Wow! What can we say but a huge thank you to East Calder Bowling Club. Today we were fortunate enough to visit the bowling club where we taught the fine art of bowling….it is much trickier than it looks! We are so grateful to everyone involved who gave up their time and for the much needed refreshments on such a beautiful day. Considering some of the children had never bowled before there were some real pros in our midst. We would also like to say thank you to the Club for the incredibly generous donation to the P7 Hoody fund. This was much appreciated. The children thoroughly enjoyed this worthwhile experience.

Community Hub Visit

Today the Community Hub visited the KNEC Community Listening Project and Warm Hub in East Calder. The project aims to provide a space called a warm hub. Starting with 4 hours, 2 days a week (Monday and Thursday 11am-3pm) They open in the downstairs of East Calder Church Hall allowing people to come and sit in the warm. There will be a free bowl of soup, roll, warm drinks and biscuits available. There will also be free WI-FI which allows people to sit in and complete work if need be. This will also help people who would be isolated in their homes facing the potential of suffering loneliness.

We helped preparing lunch, getting plates ready and then, very carefully serving lunch. We also had a lesson about listening, as it is central to the ethos of the Warm Hub. Another group looked at the organisation of the Hub and how it accommodates everyone. It was great to be able to chat to so many of the visitors to the Hub. Later this week we will present the Hub with a cheque from our Dress Down Day fundraising. Thank you to everyone at the Hub for such a warm welcome.

Community Hub

It was great to be able to visit The Partnership Centre today. After a long wait due to covid restrictions our Hub group has finally had the opportunity to make links with the community again. We had a great time visiting the library,completing quizzes,questionnaires and even had a storytelling session. It has encouraged us all to grab a library card and make the most of this great resource right on our doorstep! Many thanks to the Library and Debbie for opening early for us. It was fantastic to have the whole library to ourselves. Keep an eye out for our next Community Hub visit!

Community visit to Manse Court P6

It was great to start making links with our local community once again. With it being the festive season P6 were keen to visit Manse Court in East Calder and share some Christmas Joy. We exchanged christmas cards, some Christmas goodies and even a rendition of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer! We hope that this will be just the beginning of developing our links with the community with a planned visit to the Partnership Centre already in the diary. Many thanks to our parent helpers.

Ranger Service Visit P6

We were lucky enough to have a visit from The West Lothian Ranger Service this week. This was an environmental workshop which engaged the class by running a range of nature inspired games to help them understand the community and environment around them. We started with a mapping activity where we saw an aerial shot of East Calder taken by a satellite. It was interesting to discuss what our access rights were to the land that surrounds us and how by following a few simple rules it will allow us all to assist in managing our natural heritage whilst also enhancing biodiversity.

Royal Mail Competition Finalist!

We have received exciting news that one of our pupils has made it through to the 120 finalists of the Royal Mail ‘Heroes’ Stamp Design Competition! Well done to Lily in P6 🙂 We have our fingers crossed that you make it to the next round (where 24 from the 120 finalists will be announced in November) and hopefully even make it to the final 8 winning stamp designs! An incredible 606,049 entries were received from children across the UK, with an amazing 7,479 schools taking part so to make it through to the 120 finalists is a great achievement – we are very proud of you and love you ‘Heroes’ stamp design.
