Improving Gender Balance and Equalities with Education Scotland @ECPS

In term 4 last session, our Primary 7 and Primary 7/6 pupils were lucky to work with Fiona Shaw from Education Scotland – Fiona’s role is to work with schools to ensure everyone has equality of opportunity, particularly with careers and subject choice. Pupils engaged with a variety of tasks which raised awareness of stereotypes . There was a lot of thought provoking conversations which really made them all consider unconscious bias.  Our staff are excited to welcome Fiona Shaw back to East Calder, along with the staff from Kirknewton Primary, for more work on improving the gender balance and stereotypes in our October In Service day.

P3R Maths week

This week is Maths week and we have been looking at visualising numbers. This helps us get a picture in our mind of how big or small numbers are and how we can show this. We looked at how patterns can help us to count and work out amounts quickly.

We coloured in dot patterns to show numbers to 30.

We drew long lines with chalk in the playground and we had to visualise where the numbers would go on the line.

We cut out dots of coloured card and used them to show 2 digit and 3 digit numbers…and even 4 digit numbers!

Well Done P3R!  Super number work.

Its great to be back!

Primary 1

This week Primary 1 have been consolidating their learning of Jolly Phonics first sound group. (s, a, t, i, p, n)  Look out for a page showing the sounds and actions coming home in the school bags soon.

Today we went to our House Groups for the first time and some of us shared our ideas about school.  Well done Primary 1!

If possible please order your child’s lunch on line, it will save us a lot of time in class.  Many thanks.

P4S Literacy

This week our writing lesson was great fun.  We were given a person card with a job they would do and had to describe their character. Then we were given a setting card and we had to think of adjectives to describe it.  Finally we were given a natural disaster card and had to write notes about what would happen.  So we might have had a nurse on Mars when a hurricane happens or a farmer in a supermarket during an earthquake.  It was hilarious!!!  Next week we will be using these notes to write an imaginary story.  We can’t wait to share the results.

P5B Assembly

P5B had their assembly today. Considering we only had two days to come up with the content and practice it, I think we all did very well! It was nice to share our camp experience with parents and the rest of the school. Miss Beattie is very proud of P5B!
