Primary 2A Phonics

Good afternoon everyone,

I hope you have all had a lovely weekend. Please see the Spelling words for each group below. This week, our Phonics sound is oo and some children also continue to practise reading and writing CVC words. Please support your child to read and write these words at home.

Please also continue to support your child to read Fry’s sight words at home. They do not need to practise writing these words until they are confidently able to read them. Please encourage your child to bring their highlighted Fry’s words sheet to school each week so new words can be highlighted.

Thank you for your continued support.

Primary 2/1 – Primary 2 Spelling and Homework

Dear Primary 1s and Primary 2s, I am missing you all very much and I look forward to being back in school.  I will be in touch via Seesaw shortly too.

Here are the spelling words for this week for the Primary Twos.  They are learning sounds“oi” and “oy”.  Some pupils are also practising CVC words.

Please support your child to read and write these words at home. The “Create an Activity” task on the homework grid provides opportunities for the children to use a strategy of their choice to practise their words e.g. painting, writing in felt pen, writing in chalk outside, going on a word hunt around the house etc.  I attach the Homework Grid for this week and next week.

With warm wishes,

Mrs. Meikle

Learning in Praimary 1

P1 are very busy learning the next set of sounds from Jolly Phonics,  g,o,u,l,f,b, and starting to recognise ‘tricky’ common words that we can’t sound out like ‘the’ and ‘of’.

Look out for letters in bags next week showing the sounds and actions to go with them.

In maths, we’ve been learning number bonds eg what two numbers go together to make ten?  We’ve also been learning to recognise, say, order and write our numbers.  You could try practising this at home too!

At the beginning of this term, the boys and girls in each class were asked what they would like to learn about.  Every class voted for an area in their classroom to be turned into something new…   The boys and girls came up with some amazing ideas.  Just look at what they decided to do!

P1b decided to build a tree house.  They’ve been learning about how trees grow, what trees look like in different seasons and labelling parts of a tree.  They’ve also had great fun reading and looking at the pictures inside the tree house.   Thanks to Mrs Hay for all her help!

P1a voted for a doctors’ surgery…

They’ve had great fun making appointments, finding out about different parts of the body and looking at pictures of x-rays.

P1c chose to make a vet practice.  They have been taking x-rays of the animals on their x-ray machine and want to find out what the inside of a cat looks like!

The x-ray machine.  Patients are waiting their turn.

P2/1 chose to make a Post Office.   They’ve been learning about the journey a letter makes, weighing items and sorting the post into small, medium and large letters.  They’ll also be learning about continents, as part of their ‘Pirate’ topic.

Next week is Road Safety Week.  We’ll be learning how to stay safe crossing the road and cycle safety.

It’s also Book Week next week.  We’ll have lots of fun learning activities to go with the books from the Scottish Book Trust.   Look out for your Bookbug Bag gift next week.   You may like to look at the Scottish Book Trust website to get some ideas for home.

Good morning P3!

Here is your homework grid for the next 2 weeks.

P3 Homework grid Nov 9th

You will also be able to access it on Seesaw.

We have loved seeing all of your learning on Seesaw. It is helping you to become more confident when sharing your learning with others.

One of your next tasks is to prepare a short class talk about the job you would like to do in the future.

We will ask you to give your talk some time after Monday 23rd of November.

We are looking forward to enjoying lots of lovely book activities during Book Week Scotland which begins on Monday 16th November.

Keep up the good work!

Miss Reid P3A              Mrs Robertson P3B

Wearing face coverings

Following on from the new guidance issued, face coverings will be worn by adults in school when they are in communal areas shared with pupils.

We ask that parents and carers still continue to wear face coverings when collecting children from the school grounds. Thank you for your support.

Primary 2/1 Learning

Primary 2/1 have been working very hard since returning from our October break.  Here are examples of a few things they’ve been up to.

Literacy                                                                                                                                                 Primary 1 have started their third set of sounds and learned ‘g’ and ‘o’ this week (‘o’ is sounded as in ‘on and off’).  Primary 1s are enjoying using their bank of sounds to create words too and we had a lot of fun doing this together. Primary 2 have been learning the sounds ‘ai   ay   a_e’ this week and worked hard on their activities around this including making a table of words for each sound.  They are also enjoying their twice weekly reading group sessions where they have the opportunity to think about prediction as well as fluency.

P2 Spelling ai and ay 26th October 2020

These are the words we used for this week’s sounds.  These can be practised at home too.

French                                                                                                                                              Primary 2/1 have enjoyed being introduced/reintroduced to French and we’ve touched on/revised Greetings this week.  We have the help of a French puppet called Tibo to liven up the lessons!

Numeracy                                                                                                                                        Primary 1 and Primary 2 have enjoyed their separate Number Talks activities in the mornings.  This is a warm-up numeracy activity which follows a set of rules to encourage mental maths strategy thinking and uses discreet hand signals in order that students are not distracted by others putting their hands up.  We also discuss any mistakes in a positive manner as we can use these to deepen our understanding of numbers.  Primary 2s are also learning about addition strategies and understanding number sequences where we practised counting in 10s.

Science                                                                                                                                                This term with Mrs. Beattie P2/1 have started to learn about Water and how this can change from one form to another.  On Thursday the children had an outdoor lesson using a nature walk around the school playground to look for examples of where water is found and any examples of this changing form.

Health and Wellbeing                                                                                                                      We are learning more about our new toolkit for managing our emotions.  This is called Zones of Regulation and the children can choose from four coloured zones to put their name in.  We have Green for happy/calm, Yellow for worried/frustrated, Blue for sad/sick/bored and Red for anger/being out of control.  We will continue to work more on our understanding of this and what strategies we can use to self-regulate should we need to feel calm.

P2 Homework Grid                                                                                                                                This has been also been posted in SeeSaw at the beginning of the week.    All children should now have access to Seesaw to see the homework grid. If not, please can you get in contact as soon as possible to resolve this.   Homework will run on a two week basis from Monday 26th October to Friday 6th November.  Further information on Sumdog and Reading Diaries next week.
