P1 Book Week

We’ve had lots of fun this week during Book Week. We read about Arlo , the lion who couldn’t sleep, and made our own Arlos with a song that helps us to sleep too. We looked at a non-fiction book and made our own woodland animals book for our class library. The book ‘Inch and Grub’ explored friendships and showed us what was important. We thought about what made a good friend and put our ideas on friendship flowers. We also chose a book and used a scene to make a window display.

Our week ended with Children In Need Day. Many thanks for your kind donations.

P3 Book Week

We had lots of fun activities to help in our learning this week.  We received new books for our class library and have been reading them each day when the bell rang to tell us to ‘Drop everything & read’.  We were read some new stories and created a big display with our ideas from the book Octopus Shocktopus.  We used an idea from the book to design and label our perfect house.  We took part in ‘design a book mark’ competition. We learned about exclamation marks and found some in books in the class. We listened to David Williams & Julia Donaldson on Author’s Live.  We took our books to the playground to read during Outdoor Learning.  We found verbs in our reading books, completed some Readingwise and Giglets tasks and we each received our ‘Read, Write, Count’ bags containing two new books and lots of other surprises.

West Lothian Museum Services -P7B

Fantastic to welcome Maureen Liddell fromWest Lothian Museum Services to our class today. She shared with us a range of aretefacts and stories relating to our current context of WW2. We learnt about how our country prepared for war, discussing rationning, evacuation and shelters. The class were fortunate enough to handle a range of artefacacts including a gas mask, identity cards, ration coupons and even an ARP warden helmet. This visit links closely to the work we are doing in PM writing at the moment where we are looking closely at the features and layout of a recount.

So just what is in those jars? P7B

We welcomed Michelle Sutherland from West Lothian Drug and Alcohol Service on Wednesday. Michelle spoke to us about identifying the different kinds of risks associated with the use and misuse of a range of substances. We discussed  the impact that the misuse of substances can have on individuals, their families and friends. Moving forward East Calder has been chosen as a pilot school to work alongside WLDAS to create a HWB action plan which will then be used acoss West Lothian. Watch this space!

P3 Learning

On Wednesday a surprise arrived in our classroom. It was a box and it had a label that said, “To P3a, don’t open until Friday.”

We were very excited an wrote a list of what might be in the box.

On Friday we finally got to open the box.

It contained… pine cones!!!!

We all had a look and wrote down what we might like to learn about them.

Let the learning begin!!!

P7B Outside School Achievements

Congratulations to these members of 7B for their achievements outside of school. We have the rosettes for 2 clear rounds in a  jumping competition at a local horse riding school, quite the achievement! The medal was for an unbeatable season with Murieston United girls team, amazing! What a talented pair. If you would like to share any achievements from outside of school please let us know. We would love to showcase your talents, and remember an achievement can be anything you are proud of !

Primary 3

This week we have been learning about money. We looked at the different coins. Some people decided to order them depending on their value. Next we were given an amount of a toy and had to give our partner the coins we could use to pay. We started off with numbers to 20p but soon moved up to 50p. Some even managed up to 99p! Then we went into the playground and wrote in chalk to show what coins we would use for certain amounts. Lots of active learning with partners.

P7 Buddies

It was great to see P7 getting to know their buddies this week. Every P1 took a letter away with them that was written by their P7 buddy  explaining how they hope they can help them settle into school life. On Wednesday P7 met their buddies and participated in a range of activities from reading and drawing to sorting activities. On a rota basis the P7’s have also been helping in the playground and lunchtime in the dinner hall. It has been fantastic to see such a nurturing attitude.
