NATURE & WILDLIFE

Last week the children helped to look after our wildlife by making bird feeders using apples and sesame seeds.  During their daily walk they found tree’s to hang them from.  This helps the children develop an understanding of nature and how we can help birds and other wildlife stay well fed during the colder months.  There has been a lot of discussion from the children regarding migrating birds and moles and hedgehogs hibernating over winter.

NURSERY – BOOK WEEK

Story Stones

During Book Week we introduced new Story Stones.  The children had great fun using them to recall and retell familiar stories and to help introduce a story line into their own storytelling.  They used their imagination well to create their very own storybooks through drawing pictures.

NURSERY – BIG BEDTIME READ

We are relaunching our bedtime reading initiative during Scotland Book Week this week.  You will find this set up in the reception area of the Nursery.  These are a set of 5 books for you and your child to borrow and share at home as part of their bedtime routine.

The Big Bedtime Read’s aim is to ensure children read a bedtime story at least 4 or more times a week.

You and your child will have access to our Big Bedtime Read packs whenever you wish.  You are free to change your pack at any time.  All we ask is that you record the pack you have borrowed by writing your child’s name and the date you take the pack, in the lending folder.

We hope you take the opportunity to borrow the packs and take advantage of this activity which will greatly benefit your child by

  • Helping them to become a confident reader
  • Establishing a good bedtime routine
  • Improving concentration and behaviour
  • Helping your child develop decision making skills
  • Improving attachment and bonding between parents and children

NURSERY – UPCOMING DATES

18 November – Book Week Scotland

Book Week Scotland is an annual celebration of books and reading that takes place across the country.  In Nursery we will be launching a few events to celebrate this.

  • Caught Reading – Please take photo’s of your child(ren) at home reading in different places whether they enjoy reading in bed, the bath, in the car, in the garden.  Staff will also be sharing their photo’s and we can post them on our Nursery BLOG and/or display them in the nursery.  Please email them to Mrs Laing – wllesley.laing@westlothian.org.uk during Book Week Scotland.
  • Big Bedtime Read – We will be relaunching our Big Bedtime Read encouraging our families to borrow our packs of books and read at bedtime.  Please look out for more information during Book Week Scotland. We are looking for packs that are being borrowed just now to be returned to Nursery by the end of this week so we can prepare them for our relaunch.  Many thanks for your support with this.
  • Community Book Search – This is a nationwide campaign promoting literacy by finding or hiding books in your community and  sharing them with your children.  We will be having a used book sale in Nursery during Book Week Scotland to encourage families to get involved and purchase books to help raise funds for the Nursery. The books will include details of how to get involved.  Please look out for this.
  • Used Book Sale – Please support your Nursery by purchasing books to read at home or to hide as part of the Community Book Search.  We will be asking for a small donation which will be used to replenish our existing library.
  • Dress Up – Your children may dress up but this is entirely optional.

NURSERY – ‘Look for a book Scotland’ Initiative

We are participating in ‘Look for a book Scotland’ initiative. Children’s books are hidden around East Calder and other villages in Scotland. We were lucky to hear about this from a family at our nursery. We searched locally and found some! They are hidden for children to find,  read, keep them for as long as they like and then hide them again for someone else to find!

Add a photo of the find and post on the ‘Look for a book Scotland’ Facebook site.

This initiative is to inspire and encourage children to read!

We are planning to have a book day in the Nursery soon, where you can sponsor books for hiding in our community for other children to find.  Look out for more information coming soon!
